Jerking Brakes

What generally causes jerking brakes at slow speeds. Regular shoe brakes.

I would suspect that one or more of your brake drums are grabbing before the others. Have you checked your brake shoe drag on your hubs recently?

It could also be your brake controller causing the jerking. If so, invest in an inertia actuation model.

You don’t say how old the rig is, but I would pull all the drums to verify that all the brakes are physically all there and working correctly. You could easily have one of the brakes falling apart inside causing the jerking.

Agree with Bob on start with checking all the brakes. Make sure something did not come apart and check for grease on the brake shoes if all is good then check brake adjustment. If that all looks good then look at your brake controller.

Brakes are about 6 months old. I have had the rig for two weeks. I adjusted the brakes just before I left on this trip. I think I have the controller set to high at 11.4. Going to turn it down some when I leave out on Thursday.

Being 6 months old says that someone probably also looked at and probably repacked the wheel bearings. If the E-Z Lube function was used, there may have been a seal failure and one or more brakes are contaminated. This is especially true if those bearings were repacked using a full pressure grease gun instead of a hand operated lever gun. Many, not all of us don't use those E-Z Lube axle zerks, preferring hand packing instead

Too high controller setting will quite possible lock up the tires, leaving long skid marks along with flat spotting the tires. You may notice jerking at low speeds while at highway speeds - skid marks and a blue cloud of tire smoke

I think it is the settings to high. I have the Tekonska 3 controller. Looks like the setting was on Booster 3 which is too much. I will know in the morning when I leave out.
