Loose kitchen sink drain piece

The stainless steel trim ring on the kitchen sink drain spins freely and I can't get it to tighten. The drain doesn't leak at all and the fittings under the sink are all tight. Any ideas as to how to tighten it? Should I just put plumbers putty around it? Thanks!

When you have to repair it, get new parts, there is a gasket under the sink basket drain that is probably bad. If you take it apart, new parts and a bead of the plumbers putty under the basket strainer.
We call this a '3 trip to the hardware store repair'... My pop was a Plumber turned Pipefitter, I worked on enough of these problems to know I didn't want to go the Plumber route. Good luck with it.
