Hydraulic Slide Gears

I was checking things out under my hydraulic slides (2) yesterday and noticed that the gears and gear tracks (2 on each slide) do not mesh completely; all four of them. I suspect it has been like this from day one. Two of them mesh about 65% and the other two about 50%.

Has anyone else noticed this and/or think that it's a problem? If so, is it adjustable?

I would be guessing, but maybe you can put a washer on the shaft to move the gear left or right as needed.

It does look as though they need to be bushed one way or the other. My rollers are close enough together that the gear runs right where it should be, looks like yours are further apart. Maybe the rollers can be adjusted in?

Interesting, looks like your brackets are closer together than mine; or are there washers keeping the white guide wheels and gear in the proper place?

Looks like I got a bad job at the factory or are there others like this?

I'm not looking forward to taking this thing apart!

Here’s a little different angle. It looks like mine is just a tighter fit, no room for anything to move. I doubt the rollers are adjustable, at least on mine.

In my last photo above, the bracket width from the head of the bolt that has the white patch of dry lube on it to the nut is 3 7/8”. That might shed some light on weather it’s been redesigned

Looking at the pictures, it now just looks like the gear packs are built differently.

Scott,

You need to get your new truck and get on the road so you stop looking to find something wrong.

Thanks for measuring that Mark. My brackets are also 3 7/8 apart. I compared the photos and your gear pack has spacers on the inside of the bracket between the bracket and the guide wheels. Mine does not. The shoulders on your guide wheels are against the gear on both sides; mine are not.

ScottZ - for a moment there I thought you were posting the pics I took of my gears and posted a similar question about alignment. My pics look just like yours except I don’t have the mouse mesh installed!!

I can’t find the thread and I don’t remember the answer - but I took the pics while we were at the Fort Collins KOA Aug 2019. The thread should be about that same time but I could not find it just now to refresh my memory on it. I think I was wondering if there was an adjustment I could do to align the teeth up closer to 100% and I think the answer was NO. Anyway two and a half years later I’m still good to go with the gears as they are. But I wish they were lined up better.

I could not find the thread either. Mine has been working for almost five years; glad to hear yours is still working ok.

I went out and looked at it again and was thinking it would not be too hard to drop the gear pack; the hard part would be finding appropriate spacers. Now, looking at the photos, I'm not sure it can be dropped out of those brackets without major disassembly. I'll look at it again tomorrow. If nothing else, I might take the weight off the slide, align the gear and track, and see how long it stays.

I retract this idea Mark. I took another photo of mine from the bottom and they look the same except your frame welded brackets might be a little thicker. Now I can't account for the space between my guide rollers and the gear.
Here is new comparison photo. Your gears are on the left.

I think my gears are the same way. I figure as long as the teeth on the gear are completely on the drive shaft teeth, everything is ok.

Perhaps. On one of them the gear only engages 50% of the track. The other three are better.

If this was my camper I would fix that. They should be 100% engaged. I would Also see if they were adjusted for height right. If they aren’t it will put too much stress on one tooth at a time. Gears are cut so they roll over each tooth. As one tooth disengages the next tooth is picking up the load so you have the same pressure on the gear all the time. They run smoother with less pressure on the teeth. I have cut thousands of rack and pinion gears.

Scott, a quick call to Lippert would be my recommendation. You should have full engagement on the gear/rack. There are some pretty good manuals on the Lippert site.

Disassembly would be a pain. Maybe take the weight off, slide the gear over and put some kind of thin split clamp on.
https://www.mcmaster.com/split-clamps/
It's not not hard to jack up the slides just a bit to take the weight off.

Maybe not as much of a pain as I thought at first. I took another photo from the bottom looking up. The bracket that is welded to the frame is open on the bottom. Removing the two bolts should allow the gear pack and shaft to drop down. Once it drops down, I think all the parts would slide off the end of the shaft. Then the issue is fabricating a spacer.

Good idea Ron, I'll call Lippert. I have months to figure this out

Not sure this is of any help, but I vaguely remember reading a post by Bob Rohrman about changing his gear packs. IIRC, there are 2 different gear packs with a different number of teeth depending upon which one you have. If you have to change the gear pack, make sure you get the right ones. I think I also remember something about being able to adjust the rod to align the gears better and make the slide run true.
