I'm a retired science teacher and the closest I ever got was here in Central FL. I was able to see the nighttime launch last year. Spectacular at 65 miles away - straight line measurement. Can't wait to see it from the KSC...

You guys be sure to get there early on Thursday.... Traffic gets really bad.. At one time it took us an hour to go two miles..
Last year we arrived at noon for a 9:45 pm launch and still had to park way in the back of the parking lot... I'm so excited for you.... This time we'll have to watch it from our lot... Good but just not the same as being there.
If you want to go way back on my blog to Dec 8th and 10th 2006, you will get a good idea of what it was like.

I was living in Lakeland, FL and was standing on the balcony watching when the Challenger exploded. We could see the shuttles when they cleared the trees from our apt. We were in an RV park in Davenport and availed ourselves of the "Breakfast With An Astronaut" event when the Columbia launched. We had breakfast with Story Musgrave and watched the launch. Awesome experience. We felt a real sadness when the Ship burned up on re-entry.

I may be in the Port St. Lucie area around the end of April. I see there is a shuttle launch planned for April 24th. Does anyone know how the viewing would be from that far away? I guess that puts me about 90 miles south.

Not sure. We were 65 miles away here in Central FL and the night launch last year was spectacular. Can't really compare that to a day launch at 90 miles. On a clear day, I suspect you will get a great view. That is a day launch, I assume?

We watch all of them from here. We are right about 2 miles from PSL. You should be able to see it. You cant see the ship from here, just the fire. Also depends what time of day, A.M., the clouds over the beach that time of year. If you are here go to the Jensen Bch causeway, that way you get a direct view north without any trees or to the So. Beach Bridge in Ft Pierce.

Shuttle launch just reset to Sun, 12/9 at 3:21 PM. At least they didn't wait for us to pull into Kennedy Space Center's parking lot before letting us know this time. We (with Rich and Helen) plan on making he trip then...

Got here Wed afternoon. With all the concern voiced about overhead clearance at this park, I walked ahead of DW while she drove to the site. Seems as if the park has listened to past complaints and has trimmed low hanging branches. Any site large enough for our rig have plenty of overhead clearance, so that shouldn't be a concern for any of you considering to stay here in the future.
This is really a great camp ground! At $24 a night it is a steal for its location. We went to check out Jetty Park yesterday. Couldn't get in because we had our dogs with us, but no 5er. Dogs are permitted in the RV park, but not the general park. They charge $5 a day entrance fee to the park and $40 for full hook-up RVs.
As you have been tracking, they have scrubbed the launch every afternoon. With luck tomorrow afternoon (Sunday) will be a go. Several nearby campers have gone to the Space Center on tours yesterday and again today. Today they were told that the launch looks real good for tomorrow. NASA us under the power curve to launch and if they can do so safely it will go tomorrow.
Cheers!
Joe

Yes it is. I was listening this morning at 6:30 on NASA TV when the sensors went from all four showing "wet" (elation) to sensor #3 (6:45 am) suddenly failing (disappointment). We, like NASA, have re-scheduled for Jan 2.
