Hi, All

OK, time to get the Monty ready to enjoy the road, But forgot how to use Hot water heater and oven

1. for electric hot water use do you just turn on heater switch on wall? and for gas what?

2.oven, after lighting pilot is it automatic, and can you travel with pilot on?

Man, it is tough getting into the golden years!!!!!!!

I could not find my keys this AM, my Granddaughter who is 4 says Grandpa " that is OK some times I forget how to tie my shoes, I know where your keys are"

Water heater: This is the way it works on mine ----
#1:FILL WATER HEATER with water! Open kitchen sink faucet to the hot water position until you get water coming out. Turn off sink faucet.
#2 There is a switch on the water heater that you access from the outside panel that covers the water heater. It usually has a clip in it. Pull clip (and keep it where you can find it again) and flip the switch to the "ON" position. Replace panel.
#3 There is a switch for the water heater on your inside control panel. Flip that to ON. You'll have hot water soon.
Remember you must be connected to shore power for this to work.
NEVER turn on your hot water switch without water in your water heater. If you do, you'll burn out you heating element in about 5 seconds and will have to replace it.

OK, got that part,now how does it work with gas? and do I have to turn outside electric switch off?

And what about the oven?

If you can believe it, we've never used the oven. I expect that the instructions for operating it came with your RV. Maybe someone will come along and help with this part of your question.

Gas operation of the water heater:
You do not have to turn off the outside switch to run your water heater on propane.
#1: Turn off the switch on your control panel for operating the water heater with electricity (I have heard of some folks using both electric and propane at the same time but don't do this myself)
#2: Ensure your water heater is filled with water - see step #1 in previous post
#3: Ensure propane tank(s) valve(s) are in the open position (turned counter clockwise all the way )
#3: Turn on the gas/propane switch for you water heater (located on the control panel - it will illuminate red when turned on)
#4: Enjoy hot water when it heats up - usually about 10 minutes from when it's cold.

For the oven, keep a flame by a burner until it lights (gets air out of the pipe) then go down in the oven and light the pilot. Can't tell you about how it works going down the road, we travel with the propane off. Blowing a tire is enough for me, having the remains damage the gas pipe running by there and creating a blow torch is not for me. I know it's a 1,000 to one, but if bad stuff happens it usually happens to us.

Just my opinion, I might travel with the refrigerator on, but not the oven pilot light.

The switch inside the rig is the one that enables the water heater to run on gas(based on your year model). The switch on the outside on the heater itself is the electric switch. Some members have modified their rigs to allow for the electric to have a switch on the inside as well, but if you bought your unit new, the only switch for 2007 was the interior gas switch which on our old rig was next to the water pump switch on the stairs leading to the bedroom. You can elect to have the water heater supplemented with gas (both switches on) to get quicker heat recovery times. We have never traveled with the pilot light on.

We all get older. Reminds me of the time I decided to run the W/H on propane to clean out the burner, and it would not fire up. Messed with it for an hour or so before I realized that it was not going to fire up, because the electric was on, and the water was already hot.

We used to think that also, but a bunch of stuff in the freezer and one of the little battery powered fans has kept it cold all day long even in the summer. Ice cream in the freezer probably wouldn't work as well, however. I also wouldn't do that if we were going out from having had it sit and get warm, but since we full time that never happens anymore.

I leave my electric heater switch on all the time now.

I ue the A/C breaker in the main fuse box as my on off switch for the water heater, that way I dont have to go outside to turn my water heater on A/C if it is raining, snowing, hailing, tornadoing, hurracaning, .
And I always have water in my Water Heater before turning it on with either gas or electrict.

Do all ovens have pilot lights? I thought mine required a lighter to start it every time. ?????

They do have pilot lights, if you are lighting the burner tube and not the pilot light at the rear of the tube, you can turn the burner off, leave the knob on pilot and look inside the oven and you can see the pilot light stays lit. This is also the safest way to light the stove, light the pilot by turning the know to pilot, hold the knob in and light the pilot not the burner tube. This exercise usually requires laying in a somewhat inverted, pretzel-like configuration to get it accomplished. There are a couple of threads where MOC members provided a pictorial description of installing an automatic lighter for hte oven pilot.
