Ideas for camping sites in Southern CA
Hey all you southern CA MOC'ers out there! Steve and I managed to get a weekend off together and would like to take the camper somewhere nice, quiet, beautiful, and dog friendly this weekend. We would like to stay within a 2-3 hour drive of San Bernardino if possible. No time to do National Parks or anything big this time. Anyone with ideas? Thanks in advance.

Tara -
I'm no expert in the area, but we stayed at the Newport Beach Resort this last July. It was a nice area and nice CG with a lot of weekend action (beach movies - parties - camper gatherings - nice pool). However, it was $130 a night, which might put it on your places to avoid list . I grumbled at the cost but it seems to be consistent with the area.

Thanks for the tip Brad! But I think we are looking for something a bit more "rural" and "country" and that would be a lot less money! We would like to get out of town into the mountains if possible. That's mighty high camping fees for a single night. Wow!

Did you get the Montana up to Hurkey Creek and able to park?

Try Lake Skinner in Temecula. We love the rustic feel there and the lake is nice, they have boat rentals and lot of wild life. And you can come right down the 15. It is a county park and around $20.

Newport Dunes has really gone up. We stayed there for a week about 6 or 7 years ago and it was near that expensive.
Happy trails........................

Sue,
They must have gotten pretty proud of thier Newport area. It was kind of a yuppy place, as I noticed one gal in front of us called in a roving RV wash crew to wax her $1/2Mill Class A while she drank a Mai-Tai in the beach chair and watched (actually I was just jealous).

Hi Sue,
Yes it was no problem getting up to Hurkey Creek. There are a few tight turns inside the campground but we made it through unscathed.
Newport Dunes has really gone up. We stayed there for a week about 6 or 7 years ago and it was near that expensive.
We were there last month. 2 nights in the tightest spot we've ever been in was $180. It was so narrow I had to crawl under the slides to get to the back of the trailer.

We would have hollered but you were in Montana or Idaho at that time.
Ken
BTW, our Newport Dunes spot was 20' wide but it was flanked on both sides by thorny Bougainvilleas. They hurt just looking at them....
