hitch bolts
well i have my new air ride hitch and of course it didn't come with the mounting hardware. The existing bolts snapped off on removal, I think that is a positive, would have taken all day to back off a locking nut. my question, I cannot find any specification to what grade bolt to replace them with. I assume the dealer used grade 5 galvanized carrige bolts, however, no local hardware chain carries these. I checked McMaster-Carr and the best they carry is grade 2 in galvanized. Does anyone know the spec?

My bolts are grade 5. I wouldn't use grade 2. I'm even thinking of changing to grade 8 but that's just me.

You can't galvanize grade 8. Grade 8 is a carbon alloy and the galvanizaion process weakens the alloy.
Pretty sure B7 is the highest grade you would dip, but I don't know any mfg that makes carriage bolts out of B7.

I looked and mine are grade 5 bolts. If you wanted to use grade 8 bolts just paint them before you install them. Plus mine are not carriage bolts they are hex bolts. There is a zinc plated grade 8 bolt if one can find them?

I agree with trekker. I would go for grade 8 bolts. I have had no rust problems in 4 years with the grade 8 bolts and nuts. If I did, I would wire brush them and treat with rust retardant and paint.

In my neck of the woods, northern illinois, galvanized is strongly recomended due to winter road salt. I found some grade 5 at fastenal

Many Ace hardwares carry grade 5&8 bolts. Also Home Depot and Tractor Supply, Farm & Fleet. Don't forget the proper grade nuts to go with them

Grade 5 is the hardware that comes with hitches, and bedrails. Grade 8 is not needed. Grade 8 is also coated with a yellow zinc finish that does not corrode.
