Liability & Content Insurance for 5ers

We just got coverage for our new Montana (picking it up next week) and our carrier (Aon) asked about liability coverage. He explained that this coverage kicks in if your rig damages another's property or person (likes rolls and damages something or starts a fire). How have others handled this - and how high is your coverage?

Also curious about the limits others have chosen for contents if they don't live aboard, but do use for extended trips.

Our Rv is covered by a rider on our homeowners insurance and is treated like what it is... a home. The Coverage is exactly like the homeowners insurance.

AON is also our agent for Progressive. Since we are full timers, we carry full timers insurance and $10,000 contents coverage. Our property damage/public liability is $100,000/$300,000.

For your purposes, occasional use, your homeowner's policy should cover the contents.

When we were recreational rv'ers we had the same thing Rich said. As fulltime rv'ers with no stick home we got the fulltimer's liability (that's what it was called) on our rv insurance policy. We also added to the contents coverage because of the electronics equipment and other valuables in here.

We did a insurance check on our camper with AON( they have a different name now) They were very reasonable. You Do need to have a stick home in order to cover under the homeowners insurance. The coverage on the Rv is exactly the same as on the home except for contents and that is 10% of the contents overage on the stick house. The camper contents is $18,600. Way more than is on board. Wih progressive we had the choice of 3K or 5K and could upgrade to 10K for a price. If we did not have a stick home we could not beat the progressive price.

Not all states are created equal when it comes to insurance. In Texas your liability for your trailer follows your automobile insurance. Your comprehensive and collision have to be bought on a seperate policy and can be insured on an auto policy. You can not put an additional endorsement on your homeowners policy to cover your Montana here. Your homeowners policy will allow a 10% extension of your contents coverage from a homeowners policy to cover things in your RV. I would contact your insurance agent and check out your states rules. If your Montana is written on an auto policy you will only receive ACV payment, not replacement cost. So again be sure you are comparing apples to apples. I just called a company about their replacement cost coverage. I found it very interesting information after asking lots of questions. Their definition of replacement cost was the same as mine.

From a former casualty insurance agent, read your benefits and your exclusions. What driftwoodgal said is true. rules as to what kind of policy can be written vary from state to state. The same insurance company can't write you the same policy in every state. The policy you get will have to be in the state where you have your domicile and driver's license. Rates and coverages are controlled by state statute. Within that framework, insurance companies have whatever leeway the state grants.

I see you live in California. Perhaps a California resident will be able to post their insurance experience.
