water heater on gas

The water heater on my montana has been operated only on eletric since I have owned it. the other day I switched it on to gas with the switch inside. it came on but only for maybe 15 seconds. then it will shut off for like 15 to 20 seconds then fire back up for another 10 to 15 seconds. it will not keep burning. any ideas?

Did you already have it on electric? If so, the water temp was probably high enough that the gas didn't need to fire much.

Sometimes when it hasn't been used on propane for a period of time, there will be some little dust collections that will settle in the tube, not allowing the burner to burn. Doesn't sound like that is your problem though. I kind of agree with beakyfudd however when our water heater has been on electric and I switch to gas, because the water temp is already high enough, the propane will not fire at all. That's why I only "kind of agree" with beakyfudd.

beakyfudd, I had unplugged the shore power for 2 days. I just had never use the waterheater on gas and wanted to try it. So the water was cold. the heater starts and runs for just like 10 to 15 seconds, shuts down and starts up again only to shut down till I turn it off. It heats good on electric. Is there a thermostat for just the gas? or maybe not getting gas like it should. any suggestions welcome

Check your burner tube for spider webs and other obstructions.

Water heater boards have a "three try" cycle, where they will try to ignite three times, then shut down and the little red light next to your switch will come on. If it ignites each time before shutting down (you should hear it burn), and it does this three times it is either a flame semsor problem, or the flame is so bad it's not producing enough heat to activate the sensor. Open your outside heater door and check the flame while burning. If it's not a full blue flame, then your burner tube needs cleaned. If the flame is OK, then you have a ignitor board problem.
Hope this helps.

Hi, another thought (this has happened to me) if the water heater hasn't been used on propane for a while, there may be air in the line going to the burner and has to be lit by the switch several times to purge the air out.

If the W/H hasn't been on propane for awhile then I do something that has always worked for me. I turn on the propane stove top for about 30 seconds and it purges the air out of the line.

I'll stay out of this one so I don't put my foot further into my mouth.
