Going RV? On GAC

I been watching back to back episodes of this show. I know it's staged, but lots of truth about what people look for in RVs. Show has couples look at "3" rigs and they choose. No meat to the show. These people buy based on cabinet color and features they think they will like. My buddy is Sales Manager of Chain RV store. He tells me it's how it really works. Most time it's a decision based on monthly pmt, cabinet color or decor. Not much interest in details. Repeat RV buyers on the other hand he states takes more time and effort. I said "of course we do"!

The couple I just watched, compared fivers to a class A. They bought the fiver because of dark furniture! Really ? Really ?

Most are ripe for the pickin' by any BS artist, fast talkin' salesman, too. Very few know what they want beyond the looks of what they find that is superficially attractive. They wouldn't know the difference between a C rated or an E rated tire even if it jumped up and bit them right on the ...assuming they had even had a clue about how much the trailer weighed in the first place.

Do your research before hand, and you will be way ahead of 98% of the general population that are considering buying the same type of thing that you are.

It's not just the newbies. Why do you suppose the builders keep changing colors, etc.?

"Honey, I just LOVE the new colors on this new Montana! Let's trade our 2 year old Montana today. Who cares that we'll take a financial beating on the one we have now?"

Had a friend that was six feet 4 inches tall and his wife was five feet 4 inches and they bought a pull be-hind with a bunk bed?

He had to sleep on the couch with his feet hanging off the edge bad decision on his part, or good decision on her part?

I bought my first rig a 2006 Mountineer in 2008 and I will admit I knew very little about RVs. Yes drove truck way back when, for several years so I knew how to handle it and of course could back it into any spot. A friend told me to be sure I could get to the fridge and toilet with the slides in, that was the extent of me vast knowledge base. Fast forward to my new 2015 Montana and I know a whole lot more. This forum taught me about tires, axels, weight, and lots of repairs that I can do myself. So MOC thank you for the education and I will do my best to pass it on.

When I was doing the "Walk Through's" with new buyers at a major camping store chain, it was amazing how much the sales people BS'ed the customers and told them anything they wanted to hear about their new rigs just to make the sale. When I got them, they often asked where is the so & so item or does it do this or that and I would have to straighten them out and explain that that was not an option. Often they wouldn't even pay attention while I was explaining how their tanks should be maintained or how the electrical system worked or how to jack up and level their rig. They were to busy looking in the cabinets or trying out the various chairs and couches and asking questions about them. I couldn't spend the time with them that was needed as the company only allowed me 1.5 to 2 hours per customer for the walk through. Sad!! I knew I would be seeing several of them later on when they returned for repairs that could have been prevented if they had listened or even purchased the proper rig in the first place for their needs.

I don't think there's any question that if the customers were better buyers the manufacturers would make better rigs. Since the customers aren't good buyers we get what we get.

Ok watched last episode late last night. Man with four boys, mom and pets just pulled out with their new Toy Hauler being towed by an older 2500 GMC. I am done. Lol

Not an episode, but could have been part of a comedy... Driving down I25 to albuquerque the other day was passed by a fifth wheel doing at lesst 85. Then I passed (in our honda crv) a travel trailer with its hitch real close to the ground being towed by a toyota tundra, rear low/nose real high. Then I was passed by a travel trailer being towed by a chevy suv and the hitch on the trailer was so high that the trailer was close to the ground in the back and fishtailing with the wind. Wish I could have filmed these delights for all to see. John

Had a guy pull into our campground we are hosting the other day with a 41 ft., 3 axle, toy hauler. He was pulling it with a Chevy 2500. I asked him if he thought it was over loaded. His reply was "Heck No, the dealer told him the load capacity for the truck was 3500 lbs. and the trailer tongue weight was 3500 lbs. so as long as he didn't fill any of the tanks and carry to much stuff he was OK"! WOW!! I asked if he has ever had the truck and trailer weighted and of course his answer was "No, why should I, it's all good". WHEW!! Like the old saying goes...You can't fix Stupid!! Scary what is running up and down our highways.

I love to stand where the customer can see me and the salesman can't. I will shake my head in agreement or disagreement when he's doing his pitch.

Just watch the reporting on issues that you know the facts. Whether it's a news report or reality show, what you hear or read about an event rarely matches the facts. It makes you wonder how much truth you receive when you don't know the particulars of an event.

We are traveling in Michigan for the first time and really enjoying the state--but--the double tows-5th wheel and boat are everywhere. Yesterday, I noticed a 5er catching up to me on a really nice freeway type highway--I was going my regular 62. I was passed by a double tow going well past 75! I guess when you gota fish-you gota fish--hope they made it somewhere!

If that is the show I'm thinking of, it's filmed at the Lazy Days dealer in Tampa. I have to agree that sometimes the people seem pretty easily taken in. But,even when people are pretty RV savvy they can sometimes get blinded by the bling. From the moment my husband first laid eyes on the 2015 High Country he was hooked, he obsessed about it for months. He bugged the poor salesman at CW to death until a deal was finally reached. So, we get it home and the first weekend we take it out we sit, sweltering in the living room because the AC isn't sufficient for the size of this rig. The list of things that we should have checked is pretty long, most of them are minor. But that AC is not a minor issue. And, to be fair, I guess there is no way to foresee a problem like that. Maybe some research before hand-but quite honestly, as obsessed as he was with this rig, I don't think he'd have believed it if anyone told him there would be problems.
