Welcome to the forum. I suspect you are over the weight limit of your truck however.

forgot to say dually, a little over weight , but very stable and pulls fine, only 56000 miles on her, that all they had back then, paid for , I can buy a lot of gas for even the price of a d truck.

With our 454 I could watch the fuel gauge drop while idling

James ,my 2004 Dually Duramax 3500 is barley up to the task Pin Weight and Power wise for my Montana, but a 1993 Dually with a 454 GAS motor? hope you are not going up any big hills , I used to have a 1999 ford V10 Gas 1 ton hauling my old 2012 Monty and I had to put it out of it's misery and get a Diesel, yes you are overweight and Yes you will suck ALOT of gas, it will do it but I feel sorry for the old Chevy but believe me I have seen folks pull with less truck than that and heck like you said it is paid for that's more than I can say

Chevy did make a 454 HD 3500 dually that was rated at 15,000lbs however, I don't think it was available in a crew cab, and I know it wasn't available with 4wd.

Welcome to the MOC family James. You will glean a wealth of information and FRIENDSHIP during your time here.

What you pull your trailer with is your business but you will find the topics of weight and tires to be very sensitive subjects.

We look forward to all your future posts, keep posting away!!!

My brother and I pulled his 7200 pound 5 er out west with his 454 on a hunting trip. Used a lot of gas. One mountain we went up ,union pass in Wyoming we were down to 10 MPH with the gas papal on the floor. It was at 9500 feet on a gravel road. You lose 3.6 % of your power for every 1000 feet elevation so we were down 33 %. It will pull your camper just be aware that it is a gas powered truck. If you aren't going very far or fast you are fine, enjoy.

Towing it up Monarch Pass is one thing, going down the other side is another thing.

Welcome to the forum.

I hope you are not serious towing that weight with a '93 454. Except maybe across Kansas.

You need to understand the difference between a beat down and providing information someone might not be aware of. I'm sure this guy thought he was good to go too:

We've all met people who were gravely mistaken about something they thought was OK. Heck, some of us will even admit to being one of those people.

I pulled with a 454 96 Chevy 3500 Long Box EXT cab with a 15000 lb. cargo trailer on a goose neck and we were fine as long as you have the 4:11 gear and a 4L80 trans keep it out of Over drive and only are pulling a few hundred miles a day then you should be good to go. make sure you also have LT tires with good leaf springs

I live in the Mountains above boise, pulls flat land 2500 rpm 60 mph tows step grades at 3000 rpms 40 mph, suspension and front end has been done at boise springs work, throttle bottle spacer, k&N, open up botton end 3 inch exhaust ,dynflow muffler and cat, 35% more toruque, 15 % more horsepower, 1 ton dually is heavy duty chassis, springs , trans, and motor, 7 mph towing 12.5 solo, yea most d's have more torque and hp, but everything else is about the same, diesel mechanices say just drive the dan thing u will just be the last one up the hill, it should at least another 100000 tow miles left in her, with aux trans cooler and temp gauge , secret is keep her cool. whats the hurry, that gives me 50000 dollars to see the usa the chevy way, retired combat medic.

all over the usa, just do not over heat it and will do the job , with a bank power pak , hp and torque equal to a diesel, just be the last one the top of the, 7 mpg towing 45 % grade 3000 rpms, does just find, just have all the proper temp gauges and aux coolers, she will last.

You will be fine, like was said earlier with 4.10 gears that 454 is a beast just keep her cool and it will last forever.
I have the 8.1 in my truck and see no reason to ever get rid of it.
Heck the cost of a new long block is the exact same cost to replace the injectors on a diesel.

I'm happy you guys love your gassers...don't blame you, I loved my gasser too. However, once I got in a diesel, there was no comparison and I'll never go back...quieter, more power, better mpg, exhaust/eng brake, etc. The gasser sounded and acted like it was busting it's gut to do the job. The diesel is yet to break a sweat...it's built to tow and work hard.

I, like Tom above, loved my gasser until I got my first Duramax. However, a big-block Chevy sure was fun in the mid-70's.

There is no doubt the torque of a diesel is impressive and ya do get a slight improvment in fuel economy but how much torque is truly needed?
At 455fp of torque the 8.1 never breaks a sweat and is as quiet as can be unless the muffler has been changed. The only downside is I get 9-10 mpg empty or towing.
Dont get me wrong I love diesel's and someday I will get one but I just dont see the need right now to pay the premium for the powertrain and fuel costs, But...Isure do love the sound of a Cummins
