Diesel Funnel
Does anyone know of a funnel that adapts to the large nozzles at truck stops? A lady at one of the truck stops I was at says there is a funnel that works so you can use the large nozzle to fill the pickup tank.

My truck (3 years newer than yours) has a large opening for the larger nozzles. Can you make yours larger - or buy the newer piece that goes between the filler opening and the hose it connects to?

In mid year 2004 the neck was changed, when GM went from the LB7 to the LLY engine. I would think a wrecking yard might have the neck. Shouldn't be much to change.

I agree - it shouldn't be hard to change.

I think some people are going to use the 18 wheelers truck fuel nozzels, so they dont have to wait around the RV pumps. the only problem I see is that the fuel comes out so fast on those pumps if you have a lot of bends in your filler hose it could cause it to back up and turn off the nozzel. just a thought.

I wasn't aware that some of the diesel trucks had small filler tube openings. It should be easy to change out. I usually use the truck pumps when towing the trailer because I am less likely to get boxed in by someone with half a brain. I guess all the Dodges have big filler holes.

Apparently, older trucks have smaller openings. I have an 03 Chevy. I guess that Chevy changed the opening in 04.

I have used the semi pumps once. Boy do they ever fill up fast! They must pump 30 gallons a minute. The one I used did not have the pay at the pump option. That must be so they are sure to get the road tax from me.
Just do what people did when unleaded gasoline came out with the smaller nozzle. Get a large pipe and a hammer and just ram it through!
(Just kidding, don't try that at home kids)

Well, if you were a big rig and had to fill 300 gallon tanks, you would want it that fast. However, if you fill a pickup truck at full speed you probably will only get about 3/4 of a tank full because of the foam. Even on my SOB I either stand there and hold the trigger to the nozzle or put it on the very first click. Let it do its thing and when it stops wait a few minutes and continue by hand. Using the "gas" side for "RV" is not an option for me. To crowded, people park and block you, pull throughs are narrow, no room to navigate, etc.
However, if you are inclined to fill your tank fast, then the replacement of the filler neck is the way to go. Otherwise, you still have a narrow opening, and a funnel attachment will back flow pretty fast.
Good luck.

Wow! Just looked up the filler pipe on GMPartsdirect. That baby is $171. Glad mine came with the big one. Here's some here: http://www.transferflow.com/gm_fillneck_kits.html They're no better though. I think the wrecking yard option is the best. IIRC, they usually get about half of the OEM price.

Yep, and we wonder why the big 3 are in financial trouble. I have a light out in my HVAC control unit. I told them I wanted a bulb. "Sorry, we don't have replacement bulbs, you have to replace the whole unit for $140." Just because a 50 cent bulb is out! Thanks, but I'll just get DW to use a flashlight.

On the other hand, I got in the auto diesel line behind a trucker one time who had pulled up to the wrong pump. We were there for a while, I can tell you!

You can get the bulbs at Radio Shack, but you have to un-solder the old one and re-solder new one I think.
As for the filler, I would probably just pull the old one off, make a couple cuts with a saws-all and bend the metal back enough to let the large nozzle fit.

My 2004.5 Dodge has the large filler neck and I have used the big rig pumps several times. The fill up is fast with less foaming. You get in and out in no time.

I have never had foaming problems using the BIG pump. Sure is quicker but I only use it when towing. I do not understand why you cannot pay at the pump at these with a regular credit card. That part is a very large pain in the butt!

We noticed the credit card thing too. My 'work around' was to go in first and give them my fuel card so they would turn on the pump.

The filler neck is about 2 inches in diameter- The air return hose is approximately 1/4 inch- I think that is why we have trouble using the truck island- The big rigs don't have filler necks, only a 3 inch opening directly into the fuel tank so the displaced air in the tank can escape easily- We use the RV island exclusively and don't mind the wait as I have time to stretch my legs and inspect our equipment- This has been time well spent on several occasions but that's another story for another day- Just my 2 cents worth- Don
