Fuel mileage

Just got back from a 420 mile ony way trip on vacation for thanksgiving and was using ulsd fuel and i noticed about a 1 mpg less on my mileage and i use a additive. Has any one seen this with there diesels using the fuel grade?

I get 10 mpg[9.7] with my Duramax while towing my Montana, no change from old 300 horse dually to new 360 horse srw.

I just can't tell if it's my truck breaking in (6,000 miles) or the fuel change, but I'm getting better now than with the 500ppm fuel. Although relative to my driving, altitude, gear ratio, etc. I'm getting 16 no tow and 12 towing. 2 months ago it was 12 and 10.

Ironically, I also do better towing in the mountains than I do highway. Highway towing drops to 10 now, used to get down to 8.

Milage appears to be about the same with our 2006 Ford power stroke, on ULSD. We average 10.2 towing the Monty @ 65-70 mph. If the price would come down on the diesel it wouldn't be to bad.

I noticed the same thing on the way home from Goshen. Was getting 12 - 12.5 mpg with the LSD fuel. On the new ULSD, mileage dropped to 9.5 mpg. Nothing like a 3 mpg drop and an increase in price.

I recently talked to a GM Service Rep and he said that mileage should go up when you get to 8K - 10K miles. Looks like you are on your way Brad.

As mentioned before saw a 2 to 3 MPG less on the School buses on the ULSD. Run a couple of tanks through before you check fuel milage then check over 2 or 3 tanks of the ULSD.. I think you will see a decrease. But it smells good and it burns clean

Havent figured out the mileage yet, but just drove from Bristol Indiana without the fiver and stopped in Chattanooga TN for fuel. Approx 30 gallons. It was the ulsf we bought in Indiana. Avg. about 75mph.

Does it really make a difference??? Increase or decrease in MPG??? Who Cares???
There ain't a darn thing we can do about it but to keep refueling and pay the price. If ya wanna have the toys you gotta pay the price. I haven't checked fuel mileage in over a year as I don't see a darn thing I can do about it and I surely ain't gonna get excited about a 1 to 3 mpg decrease. Unless you are driving on the EXACT same roads, in the EXACT same direction, with the EXACT same weather conditions, with the EXACT same load, with the EXACT same pedal to the medal I doubt you can honestly say you are getting 1 to 3 mpg difference. If need be I'll pay the higher price for less mileage if that is actually the case but so far no one has proven it is. And as the alternative would be to park the Monty and sell the TV well that just ain't gonna happen.

I hear you Brad, mine gets 15.9 not in tow 13 in tow, really matters not how fast we go either. usually DW tells me to slow down kids are in hear too, but I go with traffic flow. usually around 70-75 MPH on interstates.

I keep thinking back to my 78 Dodge 440 with a camper towing a boat. It typically got 4-5 miles to a gallon, had no power to speak of, had to run premium to keep it from knocking, and the federal speed limit was only 55mph.

I was laughing with the DW a few months ago saying look at this - we're pulling 7 tons of montana at 75 mph at 2200 rpm getting 12mpg, the truck is as quiet as a Cadillac, temperature controlled, and the kids are watching TV in a back seat we didn't have before.

I would have a long way to go back in time before I start complaining!

There are folks that watch MPG closely like the school I drive for..2 or 3 MPG drop in fuel mileage over 90/100K miles a year add up. We keep very accurate fuel logs and last year when Diesel was 1.00 more per gal than gas the school fell back on the smaller Gas busses they have for awhile. I list MPG low on the justification list of why I would buy a truck or motor.There are other things far more important.

I was just wondering if it was my truck or the fuel as i was getting 11mpg and know 9.5-10 mpg. I only have about 8600 miles on it.

Hang in there pud2. One thing we all agree on is that your diesel's mpg is only going to get better down the road as you get some miles on that PSD. With just 8600 miles it is still brand new. I would not be the least bit concerned about a lose of 1 or 2 mpg.

My mileage is essentially the same, depends on the type of driving. My biggest thrill is finding cheap diesel. I found a Hess Station in Charleston next to the RV Park. $2.29 a gal. I could have done better at Walmart, $2.27, but it wasn't as easy to get to, and it was busier. Every other place I found was 20 to 30 cents more per gal. I filled my extra tank to the rim.

I have a 2005 F250 PSD and it gets almost 18 mpg when not towing. It has 40K miles on it and the miles/gal wes much lower until I got around 25K miles on it. I have kept track of all fuel put in it and you could see the milage getting better up to 25K and since then it's kept in the 17-18 miles/gal range.

I was pulling a 4,000 trailer and it didn't effect the fuel milage too much. With the 5th wheel the mileage drops but boy does it tow so much better then the little trailer.

I used to get 12.5-13 with my RAM 1500 Hemi no t towing anything, paying megabucks in Canada for gas. Now with my Duramax I get 17-18 not towing anything, plus save a buck almost a gallon buying diesel in the U.S.. I am a happy camper.......
