Weight and payload issues.
The attached article points out several issues brought up by our members in recent posts about safe towing and being overweight limits. I am not part of weight police, nor do I really have a dog in this fight. The fact is, manufactures are giving consumers facts about their products capabilitys. It's up to customers to accurately calculate available towing and or payload capacity. This article shares nothing new, it simply gives you facts that are necessary to remain within the trucks true specifications. Trucks and trailer specs don't include tools, drivers weight, dogs or even fuel. So if you are concerned about being within your trucks specs, this is good refresher stuff.

Hi
That is good information however the information and loading charts change drastically when you go to the 5th wheel configuration.
For whatever reason GM doesn’t make the figures for the loading using a 5th wheel hitch readily available. It took our dealer over a week to get them from GM for the 2015 3500 DRW truck we were looking at. It does make a great deal of difference in the towing capacity.

If you would like a real eye opener go look at the J2807 tow standards.

There just isn't a substitute for weighing your rig and truck separately and together and each wheel if possible. We weigh at least every other year and adjust accordingly.

I for one refused to get sucked in to another "weight" debate on this or any other forum. There are many 5th wheel haulers who are over GVWR and GCWR and will list every excuse and reason why either "it's really okay" or "I really am within ratings" or "it's my truck and RV and I can do what I want." As this thread gets longer, check out the TV of those making the longest posts...they are usually the ones that are most over weight and trying to justify that situation.

Will chime in only to say, weigh it, DQ X 3! Then do your homework not only on tow vehicle capacity, but the tow vehicle tires.

Hi
Sorry I have been busy with some part time work on large tractors.
I will have to find the paper but basically when the 5th wheel hitch is installed in accordance with GM’s specifications as long as you don’t exceed any axel limitation and the GCVW rating you will not exceed the TV GVW rating.
The reason is where the hitch is mounted. When you reach the maximum GVW rating by loading the 5th wheel trailer the front axle is at its maximum axel rating.
I do remember the GCVW rating was 30,500 Lbs for the 3500 with DRW.

This morning I stopped a CHP Officer from the Cottonwood truck scales. We had a short, but interesting chat about this issue. I asked if they look for overweight RVs and he assured me they do. He said often more than one condition / issue exists that warrants being pulled over. He said we go straight to what's on the door ! Not what modifications have been made. The door plate is what they use. He said if it appears overweight, we escort you to the scales. He ended with a recent story where the guy had a 3500 Dually, but the Toyhauler being towed came in at 21,800 lbs. That put him way over the 15,000 limit for towing recreational trailers and the GVWR of RV. It also exceeded the 26,000 total weight used for CGVWR used in Cal. He said in that case the driver needed a Class A, got tickets and forced to park the rig. He estimated many big fivers are way over limit, just with personal belongings. He also said 1 lb over is the law, no fudging. Just FYI.

Did he get a ticket for being over weight or not having the proper permit or both? And are drivers from out of state required to have special permits?
Thanks Lynwood

If your licensing state doesn't require a special permit you are ok
They cant expect you to have special licensing for all 50 states.

The toy hauler above and nearly every large toy hauler and recent year large 5er (every Montana Legacy and a few HCs) puts CA licensed drivers in the Non Commercial Class A license category as we've discussed before. We (CA Drivers) should all upgrade our license, dealers should inform us and help us to do so (wouldn't that be a nice dealer), until then CHP should continue to ignore us since they should know very well we are all out of our license class.

We live in Virginia. I had a friend ask the weight division of the state police about an RV getting stopped for being overweight. The reply was we don't bother with RVs we have more than we can do giving the dump trucks tickets. He said a white van pulled up in his drive one day the driver got out said he was with the IRS and was going to check his fuel to see if it was off road. My friend ask if they checked pickup trucks, no we don't have time to fool with them.

Excellent State by State breakdown. Not sure Cal law differs that much. Over 26,000 lbs for example, seems to be threshold for stricter license requirement.

Va has a 26000 pound requirement. If it isn't enforced it doesn't matter. We have always had a law against shooting from a vehicle. When we were young lets say kids we passed police cars more than once riding on the fenders of our car shooting pigeons under the railroad bridges. Don't try that today. You will wind up under the jail. They could start enforcing the 26000 pound limit but here at least they haven't yet.
