Conditions of I-81 thru PA

Traveling to Bristol, TN from Central New York State. Inquiring on the conditions of I-81 both southbound and northbound. Wondering if Rt 15 (I-99) may be a better choice although slightly longer. Thanks in advance.

I-81 through Pa, Md and Va is a heavy traveled trucker route. It gets busy with bumper to bumper semi's on many days. Be careful on I-81 both north and south if you decide to take that route.

Last time we were on the section from PA to Syracuse was pretty rough.
We start from South of Rochester and take I390 till we pick up US15/I99 to just North of Harrisburg where we pickup I81

Through Roanoke it’s a good road. It is being widening here but that doesn’t slow the traffic usually. Be careful this is a safety corridor. Fines can be steep for speeding up to $5000. I’m sure you won’t have any trouble with that. If there is a wreck 81 will become a parking lot. One suggestion get off at exit 43 take a right at Main Street that will take you back to 81 in about 25 miles. It’s a pretty drive up through the valley and about as fast as 81 and a lot less stress.
