First, welcome aboard! Glad to have you and appreciate your military service.
Since the 5er is new the simplest thing would be to take it back in for warranty repair. It's hard to know what the problem is without some hands-on diagnosing but if it is the heating element it might also require that the fridge be pulled to repair. Especially if the element failed in such a way so as to weld itself to the heat stack as I experienced (you can check that through the exterior vent by feeling if it can move or not). I've done it but would rather let a repair shop do it under warranty.
