Up I 65 to Oshkosh, WI around Chicago

I see Paul got help so I am asking for advise too. On 20 July a buddy and I (Ann is staying home) are going to Oshkosh, Wi for the Fly In.
We will come up I 65 towards Chicago and need to get around the West side to Oshkosh. We would be arriving south Chicago around 3 to 4 Pm. (that does not sound good already)

I just looked at I 39 up and 151 out of Madison which is 80 miles farther. Is this worth the extra 80 miles and not quite two hours driving? With evening rush hour traffic it looks like the way to go.

Thats a tough call. I been through chicago many times. Mostly, without monty, I don't think I have ever got stuck for two hours. The exception being near the I-80 , I-65 interchange area but I was going with the rush hour traffic and that was some years ago during heavy construction in that area. I not sure when if ever I80 isn't under construction in that area. to some extent you will not face that the worst rush hour till on the north side. I would avoid I90 downtown for sure.

John the biggest problem is where are you going to stay after you go through chicago as there are not nice parks for at least 100 miles and then you are in milwaukee so then go on to oshkosh but that is now 3 hrs after chicago,, also you will be on central time so you lost a hour ... the drive through chichgo is not bad if you stay on the toll rd but not downtown;;its where are you staying ;; sailer

John,
Since it is my buddy and me we will stay north of Indianapolis and then drive the 300 plus miles to Oshkosh in one day. We adjusted our trip to 600 the first day and 300 the second so we may be able to get around Chicago on 355 or 294 during noon time. Which route is better?

John, I live north of the city and have gone through rush hour w & w/o the fiver. If you can drive it's no big deal. Just get in your lane and stay there. Don't take the express lanes if you're towing, it may cost you a ticket as well as the rath of thousands(well maybe hundreds)
