Balky Reese 5th wheel hitch
My hitch is becoming more difficult to close around the pin- I grease the only zerk frequently and use a spray on other moving parts- Has anyone else had any problems with the 18k Reese Drawtite? Okay MOCERS, lets hear from y'all- Thanx in advance- Don

Is it the standard Reese or the Signature series?

Have you ever pulled the top section of the hitch off for cleaning and re-lubing? I do our once a year. Another question, how do you hook up? You are not supposed to drop the pin box on to the hitch. Instead, you are supposed to leave the pin box just a tad lower (half inch to an inch) than the hitch surface and then back into it with the truck.

I have found that if I lower the trailer before backing under, it is easier to get a positive hook-up on the first try- I don't like to force it but it seems necessary until I can remove and clean the underside of the hitch- We can do that as soon as we get off the road for a few days- Thanx again for the tips!!!! That is the proper way to hook up. I know it sounds counter to common sense, but Reese is very emphatic on hooking up the Signature hitch in that manner. So you're not forcing it, you doing how it was designed to work.

We have the 18K signature hitch and our problem is the opposite of yours. We can't get it to release unless we pull forward a little bit. Then I have to go and pull the handle again then it will release. With your problem check to make sure the trigger tab inside the receiver is not bent and the pin makes contact with it when you back into it. If that trigger tab is bent it won't close.

I agree with Tom that the proper way to hitch it up is to have the pinbox slightly lower than the hitch saddle so the pinbox rises as it slides onto the saddle.
That was true with my standard Reese and with this superglide. With the Reese I had to pull forward slightly to disengate the handle. With the superglide I have to chock behind the wheels, then back into the trailer and set the emergency brake.
