News Flash

Am not in the market, but just for the "sport" of it went to the Chattanooga RV Show this past Saturday. Got to talking with a salesman for a dealer that carried Mobile Suites and he told me that it is not a problem to tow a 21,000 lb plus Mobile Suite with a 3/4 Ton truck. "All you have to do is install airbags". Stated that they have a driver who delivers all the time for them with a F250 with air bags. I had a good laugh and walked away.

I share your laugh, but the salesman answered your question correctly. It was not a problem for his driver nor is it for many of our MOC members to tow heavy. Hopefully my answer will not open up bashing either way. There are many stories of vehicle and RV sales people giving bad information on the forum.

The difference between towing any Montana and a 21,000 lb Mobile Suite with a 3/4 ton is likened to the difference between towing "heavy" and towing out of ones' league!

The salesman neglected to mention his driver is towing empty trailers from place to place. There's a good chance his truck is not overloaded with gear any more than the trailer either. But that doesn't mean he isn't overweight and today it's only bad when you get caught or have an accident.

When I towed trailers for a living they were empty and I carried minimal items in the truck, just my wife, our luggage, some tools and that was it. I also didn't drive faster than 65 mph (gee that was nice of me), ever, even on downhills. It's not real world.

The airbag companies will admit they DO NOT increase the tow capacity.

Too many people are coming up with their own (wrong) justifications for stuff. You know his comments work on the ignorant and this is the sad part. Reality can surprise you.

When you get to the top of the pass with that rig, it'll be all down hill from there. In every sense of the phrase.

I bet 21K behind that 3/4 ton still puts in under the combined gross which is all some will look at. But on the other hand it has to be way over the TV's GVWR with 4K plus pin easy.

What Mobile Suite model is 21000 lbs plus? Could not find any models with that kind of weight?

Not sure of the model, but must have been one of the 43' models. Pretty sure it had 3 axles. Dry weight according to DRV website is 19,700. Add propane and 100 gal fresh water and you're pushing 21,000 I believe.

I can see it now on the Mobile Suites forum (assuming there is one), "But we have always done it that way, and it pulls it just fine!" Hmmmmm, sounds familiar.

Technically his answer might have been correct in that he answered the exact question asked. But at best it was very deceiving and didn't truly answer the question that was intended to be answered.

Bottom line was he gave bad information.

The other half of that from the dealer was probably: "We also have a stock of 3/4 ton trucks for sale"!

The next question I would have asked the sales rep is, 'What mileage can I get towing that rig with my 3/4 ton truck? 1/2mpg?'

His answer was dangerous and begs for an accident to happen.

With that answer I would take anything he tells you with a grain of salt. As always verify everything the salesman tells you, especially this one .....

Many salesmen are just not familiar with the "weight" numbers on trucks and at RV shows many dealers will use temp salespeople that may know even less. Helen and I worked Rv shows for a number of years and many Dealers used Rv owners that were customers of theirs and allegedly were knowledgeable about Rv'ing. Helen and I fell in that category except we were knowledgeable and carried the "weight" Numbers with us on the floor. We lost some sales but felt better.

They ALL PULL JUST FINE, but you may not be as safe as you should be. It seems a LOT of salesman don't know anything about the numbers on trucks or trailers except what is in the brochures. You have to know how to descifer the info and it sounds that Rich and Helen are one of very few people who know how to give you proper info even it means a lost sale. Its too bad sales people didn't know more about what they are selling an steer people in the right decision.

When we first started looking at full timing a few years ago, I had a Chevy truck specialist salesman spec out what was best for hauling the monty at that time. His analysis said that I could get by with a 2500 but it would be borderline. I would have to be overly diligent in watching weight and pulling hills would be a problem. His recomendation was that if cost was an issue get the 2500 and be careful, otherwise get the 3500 and breathe easy. Dually was a personal preference.

Yah.. it's never a problem UNTIL push comes to shove. If you don't buy a puller with enough safety margin to safely tow your RV you're asking for troubles. Stopping power? Never a problem until something unexpected happens and you can't stop fast enough. Ahh, did your tranny wear out early pulling those hills? Did you smoke your brakes? Rear springs starting to take a lower set. And the beat goes on.. and the beat goes on.....
