Frame + pin box
Hello I have heard of problems with 2001&2002 5 th wheels, after I bought a 2002 2955RL. Could someone fill me in, dealer has not heard of problem. I contacted him to find out how much hitch movement is normal. I can take a forklift and raise hitch and there is 5/8 inch movement measuring between front edge of hitch and spot on trailer to raise trailer off ground.. Is this normal? Where should I look at frame... Thanks Dan

Montana did have frame problems back than. What I would suggest you do is call Keystone at 866-425-4369. Have your VIN # ready as they will be able to check to see if you have one of the problem units and also whether or not the problem was ever corrected. If it wasn't they will instruct you on your next step. Anything short of calling Keystone will not solve your problem.

Dan,
Some flex on that pin box is normal. Ask the guys at the dealer that move all brands around with the fork truck. They see it everyday.
The Keystone frame issue shows symptoms at the lower moulding on the sides around the front belly. The moulding should not move on the siding when hitching and unhitching. In addition to the call to Keystone, you can drop down that front belly pay and inspect the welds along the outer edges, cross beams, and welds up in the LP and forward compartments. If they are cracked or broke, you have an immediate issue.

Dan, we have a 2002 2955RL which we bought new. We have traveled over 50,000 miles with it. I do not believe the 2002 model 2955 was prone to the problem some have had with the frame. For sure we have seen no evidence of that problem with our trailer.
We still prefer our 2955 to the larger and newer Montana models. We looked seriously at 2007 models when we were in Florida last month (at RV Connections where we bought our 2955). We finally decided that we really preferred the model we have and decided to keep it for the time being.
Maybe I'd be sticking my neck out to say that most of the problems I have observed as reported here on the forum have been later models and not the 2002.
Good luck and happy traveling.
