Tow Vehicle tires

I just bought a 2008 F450 and it has Continental tires that look weather checked pretty good - the truck only has 52,000 miles so they may be the originals?

The tire size is 225/70R - 19.5 - like the Goodyear G647 - does anyone have experience with this tire?

Thanks

Being Continentals it's a good chance they are original but I would get them off anyway. My 2012 f350 SRW came with Continentals and they still looked ok but started separating at 32,000.

Tires aren't made to last much past 6 - 7 years and mfrs claim only 5 are safe. Doesn't matter if they're indoors or not, the 'rubber' will crack and start coming apart. There's a lot more reserve built into LT tires than ST ones, but still, I'd say yours were overdue changing. Might be OK for driving with no load, but I wouldn't.

Time for a change. Had them once and they were ugly in a year. Only worse was a new GY that decided to blow out.

Only blowout I ever had was a GY LT tire. Would never put another on even a lawnmower. That tire was new. And I have a lawn service so don't own a mower.

You can get a bad one in anything. Some people here won’t use Michelin.

Agree ~~ and I'm one that will put nothing but Michelin on the TV and only Sailun on the 5er. I wish someone made a better tire for the TV ~~ will be researching Sailun Terramax HLT when I get home from FL for the TV instead of Michelin. This helps ~~

I like the Michelin's on our new F-250 they seem to be wearing well and are very quiet. I have had pretty good experience with them on a lot of our Cars. I also use their premium tires (Super Sports) on our sports cars over several of the European manufacturers that the Cars came with. Better mileage and fewer problems.
Tires can be very expensive and having never TOWED not quite sure just how many miles we will get out of properly maintained tires. I check pressure and for unusual wear all the time.
Just offering my experience...

I have 47,000 on the Michelins that came with my 2016 F350. Will replace them at 50-51K. I'm still thinking of Sailun next time.

I had a 1988 Chevy. My first new vehicle and it was a POJ. Every thing that could go wrong with it did. Would I buy another Chevy? In a heartbeat!
The new ones aren’t made in the same factory, aren’t designed by the same people, or assembled by the same people. They have almost nothing in common. By owing a Machine shop I learned a long time ago not to be brand loyal and buy what’s best for me.

My Goodyear fleet dealer will repair any tire I bring to them regardless of age I have some over 15 years old that I purchased from this dealer when they were 12 years old and had never been on the road. This is the difference between the Fleet dealer and the light vehicle dealer. There is differences you get into a light vehicle dealer with you class A semi and they don’t even have the tooling to work on the tires.

For question the OP had

I have had good luck with the generals that came on our Silverado but had worn them out by 2011. The General wasn’t available and I needed tires so I Put Firestone TransForce tires on. We are now on our third set of Firestones with 203,000 miles on the truck. We have averaged 60,000 per set of tires including the Generals.

Now on a different subject: Our G614 on the trailer are coming up on 60,000 miles and still have most of their tread left. I am sure we will be changing them when they start showing signs of dry rot instead of mileage. We use our trailer a lot and until 2 years ago most all of the trailer use produced a positive chase flow. LOL

Phil P

PS: Goodyear publishes a 7 year life for the G614.

Phil this is what a GY store manager and personal friend told me was GY’s corporate policy is. What someone chooses to do with it is up to them.

Hi Lynwood

Like I pointed out the difference between light vehicle dealers and fleet dealers is night and day and I am referring to the US not Canada.

A fleet dealer deals with a multitude of different types of tires that the light vehicle dealers would have no way to handle.

When I bring them a Bud wheel with a tire on it they have no way of knowing if I am putting it on a Class A tractor for highway use or a trailer used off road only.

When they sell me out of date tires they do specify on the invoice they are to be used off road only.

And of course if the tire is 6 ft tall and 4 ft wide it is a given that it is on something that doesn’t operate on road.

So corporate recommendations are very different for Fleet Dealers.

Tires are a personal preference just like deciding if you want a Ford / Chev / Dodge. There are some advantages to some brands but pretty much all the major manufacturers are pretty reliable. I am a Michelin fan myself and I purchased Maxxis tires for my 5er I had before my Montana and liked them a lot. From my research I did on tires, it would be those on the trailer and Michelin on the tow vehicle

And regarding Continentals, I had them on a 2009 F250. I switched them out at about 52000 miles and they probably had another 10K miles left on them. The only reason I changed was because I was towing the 5er. Good ride, good wear and handled the load of the trailer perfectly. Always ran the rear tires at 75 psi and the front at 65psi

The GY Fleet Dealer is where I get my TV tires. I got my Firestones from them because no one could find the tires that fit my 2009 Silverado when I needed them. What I was told at that time was the size used on our truck was a new size and production hadn’t caught up with demand yet.

My GY Fleet Dealer got them from a Firestone Fleet Dealer in Atlanta. Sometimes we get them from the local Firestone store but my GY Fleet Dealer installs them and does my repairs on any tire I bring to them regardless of the age of the tire.
