Alaska Spares?
For those that have been to Alaska, did you take, do I need, additional truck and trailer tires, beyond the spares for each, if all are new now? What has been your experience/ suggestions? Thanks.

We did the trip without extra spares without worries. Had one tire repair for a screw in a trailer tire in 11K miles - did not need to mount a spare.

We had one blown tire (no damage to the trailer) and then immediately replaced our spare so we would not be without. A week or so later we replaced the other three tires on the trailer.
This was in 2016 with our previous trailer, a Crossroads Cruiser.

Well, a LONG time ago, when I was stationed in Alaska, before the Alcon was paved, it was highly recommended to have more than one spare. But nowadays, since it's paved, I don't think you need to have extras anymore.

Agree with Dave. I traveled it twice when it was 1500 miles of gravel. I took two spares and didn't use either. Now that it is paved, I wouldn't worry about it. Just watch out for the frost heaves.

Before it was paved, they used to say "pick your rut carefully because you'll be in it for the next 800 miles" ... or something like that.

Thanks to all for your responses. Makes me feel better about taking just the spares that are on the truck and camper. Especially since all tires are new this year.

No need for extras. Your one spare for each will suffice.

We agree with not having extra spares, with a caveat or two. First, don’t even think about it without having either Sailun or Goodyear G614 or equivalent. If you have Trailer King, Marathons, etc, better take a bunch. Second, TPMS is peace of mind. And third, springs are probably the number one issue, especially in Canada near Lake Kluane. We just upgraded to IS and Disk Brakes on our Montana prepping for our next trip there.

If you have GOOD tires all around that are well rated above and beyond the weight they are carrying you shouldn't be any different than normal travel. BUT is you go with marginal tires to start, you run a much higher risk of tire problems.

Same trip planed summer of 2020. My Sailuns will be just over three years old by then, not much concern there. My biggest concern is my leaf springs, in the process now replacing the worn out shear springs ( 2008 3400 RL ) Leaf springs look okay, doesn't mean they are okay, or will hold up for that trip. Most likely for the cost will change them out, before then .
My biggest question a lot of vendors out there selling the 3500 lb rated 7K axle springs , any particular brand or vendor to purchase from?? . They are all pretty much in the $50 range per spring pack.

Agree with the TPMS suggestion. It was a great peace of mind being able to watch the pressures as we went along. Just take your time and enjoy the ride. It's a long one:-)

Thanks to all for the comments. We have new Sailuns on the Montana and new Michelens on our the F350. Tire Traker system, although it has failed to give me any notice in the previous two failures, but I digress, I still use it hoping that it will work as advertised. Even added the repeater to make sure the signal,is strong. I added the X brace from Mor/Ryde. Shear springs pads look good no cracks nor tears. I don’t plan to be in any hurry and will definitely watch for the frost heaves. I really appreciate the comments, especially from those that have been there.

just did a 6700 mile Alaska trip in 2018.. No need to carry extra spare tires roads are mostly all paved except the short pavement stretches under repair. Excursions to remote areas will quite likely be gravel where caution is advised as with gravel comes pot holes but most times, worth the effort. Frost heaves are always eminent and safe speeds are a must.

I carry an extra spare everywhere I go. I have had 2 factory wheels crack and it is not as easy to get a wheel as a tire quickly. I have the Sailun's and they are tougher than wheels. I traveled 500 miles home with no spare when the first wheel cracked. I ordered a wheel and received it the next day the 2nd time. I now have Hi-Spec wheels and they seem to be ok. The extra spare gives me more peace of mind. I had the IS and disc but never thought the wheels would go bad as I've never had one go bad before on anything. I know you can't prepare for everything but if i'm going to have any problems then I prefer it be in a campground or at home where I can repair or replace.

I've not made the trip but 2 of my neighbors have. Spare tires were not an issue, but one of the travelers had to buy a couple of 5 gal gas can to make it from fill-up to fill-up. I believe he had a 20 or 24 gal tank.
I have a 36 gal tank and I carry 10 gallons spare - out in the west, off the interstates, gas can be hard to find in stations that can handle the Big Beast monty.

I carry 2 spares for my 5th wheel. I driven the highway every summer for at least the last 16 years. I've had a few flats. If your out in the middle of nowhere and blow a tire and that causes the other to blow what do you do now with only one spare?

I feel pretty fortunate, lost a Sailun due to going flat, I give credit to the quality of the Sailun staying together . I have no idea how far I went on the one tire, and the other flat. When I noticed the tire smoking is when I got pulled over.
I ran that other tire for another 1100 miles before I replaced with another new Sailun, made it my spare. Recieved my TST 507 tire monitor system yesterday, won't travel without one now. I will never know if the tire was cut, and sudden air lose, or a slow leak, but hopefully the TPMS will give a warning ,and may save a tire .

take a spare spring--if not I/S system. and a couple of wet bolts too. Make sure you know how to change either out too.

You need to find YOUR comfort zone. We did Alaska in 2013 and carried 2 truck spares and two trailer spares. Did we use them, no. But wait till you get up on the Alaska Highway and there is no cell service, no nothing for hundreds of miles. I plan for the worst and hope for the best!
