E15 gasolene warning
I just saw that the Coast Guard has issued a warning that boat owners should not be using E15 ethanol fuel in their boat motors due to warranty voiding and also possible fires due to overheating. This got me to checking, and our Honda generators are restricted to no more than E10 gasoline, and I'm pretty sure most other small engines have the same warnings. I also read recently when it was announced that gasoline could be E15 now, that there would not be any labels on the pumps that would indicate whether the gas was E10 or E15 from the pump. https://www.yahoo.com/news/dont-fill...210012929.html

I try to use only non-ethanol gas in all our small motors. If I can't get non-ethanol gas I'll treat what I get to counter the ethanol.

I also try to use non-ethanol gas in all my small engines ( witch is very easy for me as I work for a fuel distributor and we carry it all the time). If I have to get gas that is ethanol gas I blend it with my non ethanol gas so that it brings the ethanol level way down.

I use Stabil routinely in my boat, tractor, anything running on gas not used heavily. Here on the lake, couple of marine repair operators have indicated ethanol gas has resulted in increased repair revenues. The trouble here is the primary sources for non-ethanol gas are dock pumps and their prices have been historically 80 to 90 cents higher per gallon. First I had heard of overheating potential.

Apparently the overheating issue only affects marine motors for some reason. E15 has been certified ok by auto manufacturers since 2001. Very few stations around here sell E15. I think it is labeled 88 octane on stations that do sell it.

My understanding is that the ethanol content in gasoline before it had to be posted at the pump was regulated by individual states. In my states it's 15%, some stations post content at 15%, others don't even selling the same brand.
Ethanol can be damaging to any air cooled engine, not just outboard boat motors. I've been told that if you use the higher octane premium fuel, it's harder to get the higher octane with much ethanol content. I burn premium fuel in all of my small engines; I burn about $25 in fuel just mowing and trimming my yard.

The highest non ethanol gas is that we get around here is 90 octane. All Gas satiation gas starts out at 84 octane then boosted to 87, 89, or 93 ( premium ) by adding ethanol.

The reason for overheating is the more alcohol in the gas the leaner the mixture is unless you can adjust for it. Aside from that the other issues are corrosion & water absorption from the air.

In ND we can buy 87 octane non-ethanol fuel at the pump at some stations. That is all I buy for anything except my brides van. It costs about 12 to 15 cents / gallon more.

it is very costly. but you can buy pure gasoline from the big box hardware stores.
mix this min 50-50 with pump gas for less gunk in your gasoline. then after usage run even more pure gasoline in the mix till the tank runs dry. this is after running cleaners to try and remove the gunk pump stuff. your carbs, and injectors will thank you.
and this goes for any and / all small motors. and / or motors not used everyday.
