Shocking Question

DW sent this to me this afternoon. For those whom IS just isn't an option, would like to get opinions on this Roadmaster shock kit. Worth the money or a waste of funds and time? I've seen other shock kits, but they were installed at what I considered to be horribly extreme angles. I'm certainly no engineer, but this setup doesn't seem bad. What say you MOC family?

I don't have shocks on my camper, but I've read on different forum sites from those folks who have added them. Everyone who has added shocks to their camper swears by them. So, I suppose, shocks are a good thing. I have no information about the brand you are asking about though. To me, shocks are shocks, just like a #2 pencil is a #2 pencil who ever makes them.

Lee - search “adding shocks” in that google search at the top right and read thru the threads from the past…then report back here what you learn.

Frankly - I would love to find a “poor man’s” solution to the IS system…or at least improve my suspension. So far two things are on my list…adding some of those V-clips to strengthen the spring hangers, and adding Morryde X-factor braces. I would also like to add disc brakes someday.

I am looking forward to your answer on the shock absorber research.

Will do....
At work now and was interested in initial thoughts before heading off down a rabbit hole as more time allowed. Ya spent so much in upgrades on the MHC already that I'm surprised DW even broached the subject. Unfortunately much like others, IS just isn't in the cards for us.

Ya I'm also interested. This looks like a newer version of what I looked at last year. I've heard good and bad. I join you on the search Lee.

Found this. The upgrade is no joke.

Lee - maybe Tony can research this for both of us! I love getting spoon-fed good information!

Just came back inside for a short break. Not a dry thread on me anywhere.

You guys (and gals) make my day! Don't kid yourselves, some of you astound me with your searches for research. I'll join in when I can do so. I too had seen the shock mount kits a year or two ago and was not impressed at all as the shocks were very near horizontal. This one seems to be more like the shock angles on the rear of our TVs

Mikendebbie: our 2022 295RL has factory "v clips" on spring hangars and I just finished adding Morryde X braces on middle and rear spring hangars. Headed out for 2nd trip (midwest) of the year in two weeks for approx 2500 miles so hopefully will see some gains. If significant, I'll post results. Before last (spring/early summer) approx 2500 mile NW trip we added 16K Goosebox and that was worth the investment to us. YMMV

I have shocks on my Montana; I don't think they are at a horrible angle. Do they do any good? I have no idea; how do your measure that?

That's a real good pic of your setup Scott. I still think the angle of those shocks closely mimic the angle of the rear shocks on some of our tow vehicles. Doing some research I saw where someone had posted that shocks couldn't possibly do a bit of good on a trailer due to the weight. If that were true then there wouldn't be much need of shocks on the drive axle of our trucks either to my way of thinking.

If you watch the video that's embedded in this link. Focus on the under belly of the RV. I don't see any difference....

Ya - was watching video footage from eTrailer both beneath the under belly as well as inside a Grand Design. DW was all "Ohhhh Ahhhh" until I asked her to watch it again and notice the difference in the speeds at which the unit was being towed. I'll not repeat the language she used after watching the video a second time more closely.

Let's just say I'm on the fence on this one

During the 2019 western regional rally at Coos Bay it was reccomended that I add the Roadmaster Slipper Springs with shocks and disk brakes. So I had all installed durinig the 2019 National Rally at Goshen. The disk brakes love them. The Roadmaster springs and shocks seemed to help a little when they were new but after a shot time upper trim pieces would fall off the wall. In June 2022 I had the IS installed and so far the contents inside seem to travel much better. Of course you may have better results with Roadmaster.

Just an observation: Many OEM Suspension only have 2 or maybe 3 inches of travel. With such little travel Shocks don't really have time to do their work.
Now when you go to the MORride IS you get between 4 to 5 inches of travel, so those shock can do what they are suppose to do.

Couple of thoughts:
1 - shock system eliminates several wet bolts ...
2 - if shocks were designed to super dampen in several inches it would help.
3 - I could see where shocks might need changed more often.
4 - I had to have two springs changed after two years on IS ... anyone else?

Just to clarify, this was for IS or standard springs?

This thread is becoming more and more interesting

Seams to me that Sumo springs would be as good if not better then the shocks.
IS is obviously the best but out of by budget.
