What the heck could cause a bearing nut retainer to allow the nut to back off 1/4"? I was running thru maintenance and found one wheel very loose. Maybe 1/4" end play. The bearing cup had come off completely and was loose in the wheel center cover but not damaged.
If somehow it's something I did last year when doing bearing service, then it went on over 1200 miles. I did not care for the new type retainer then and really don't now. The E-Z Lube spindle does not have a hole for a cotter pin.
Pretty scary since we had just returned from Christmas vacation and are planning upcoming trips.Cleaned and inspected bearing, race and spindle finding nothing unusual - no scaring, discoloration or wear marks. That amazed me. It must have not been loose very long. I see nothing about the retainer that would allow the nut to loosen. I ordered 4 new ones and will compare when they get here. Any ideas?
