Replacing Sofa With Worktable???

Question for those of you with models that have extra seating beyond your need. e.g. Our 3731FL has two power theater seats and two hide-a-bed sofas. 99% of the time, it's just the two of us. If we do have guests it's a single or couple or our twin granddaughters. Thus, having two sofa beds is overkill. And, if more than that show up, they better bring a tent or their own rig.

I work on the road and miss a desk arrangement for my computer and second monitor. My wife does various crafts and sewing. The dinette works, but it's cramped.

We're contemplating removing one of the hide-a-bed sofas and installing a solid work surface in it's place ... maybe a countertop piece cut to fit.

Has anyone done something similar? If so, could you share pictures, reasoning behind your solution, and challenges you may have dealt with? Or, maybe you have a reason why this shouldn't be done.

Thanks.

Dave, for one, I'll be watching this post as we are researching the same idea, although it is in our 3811MS.

We want to eliminate the sofa in the back and replace in the area with the same configuration you are talking about, a desk and craft area.

Pictures, anyone have a picture of their improvement?

I have a 3720 and built a desk that replaced my couch in back window. I use the two extra dinning table chairs for the desk since it only the two of us.

We saw one rig years ago where they pulled out the sofa, put the two recliners in it's place and put a piano at the back end where the recliners had been. Don't know anything about how well a piano holds up there or how often it needs to be tuned, but that's what they did.

WOW! I bet it was a real trick getting the piano into the fiver and surely it was never towed. Tail wag!

2018 Montana High Country 331RL. Did something similar to DHUHN above. We removed the sofa sleeper under the back window and then purchased a DIY desk that matched our cabinetry. It looks like it came with the trailer. Used 4" L-Brackets to attach to legs of desk and directly into the floor. Not problems getting it in since we put it together inside the coach and haven't had any problems with it. Very happy with the space and don't miss the couch at all.

We appreciate the responses, pictures, and helpful hints. Only time will tell whether we try to do something before we leave in late June for an extended trip this summer. Still evaluating options of installing countertop, a table that fits/matches interior, or a desk as RD Thomson did. Trust me, a piano is not being considered. I'll certainly post pictures when/if it happens.

I've got a request in to the 3790/91 Owners FB page too. Hopefully that'll help with ideas too since it's a very similar front living model.

Wishing all of you happy adventures this summer.

Thanks RD. But where does the pooch sit now?

The question from DW now is whether we want some storage in this unit or just a work surface. Time will tell.

I tried, but they politely declined my request to join their group. They wanted to keep it model specific.

Poodle now sleeps on the recliner (when no one kicks him out :-) ) and on the floor in his bed when recliner is not available. Actually works out better, since he can't see out the window and barks less now.

Love it. I assume your platform has rollers so the whole assembly comes in with the slide.

Something tells me setting up a mini woodworking shop (my preferred indoor hobby) in the slide wouldn't work for me. I'll have to stick to a desk/sewing/craft/worktable arrangement and find parks with woodworking shops available.

It can easily be adapted with rollers but we signed a 2 year lease at a resort in Florida and will be parked (hurricanes aside) for a while. When we do move it I box up the shells and cymbals and leave the rack; takes about 20 minutes and the platform just goes in with the slide.

Point is, you can adapt these rigs in amazing ways to fit your needs with a little thought and imagination so don’t hesitate to do so, it’s your home while you use it, full time or not.

Also, the “children” will always find a place by your side if you love them and let them!

We didn't use our dinette table very much so took it out and replaced it with a double desk. I had the idea and John built it. See https://photos.app.goo.gl/RmufDs3c516BmsSW6 for pictures.

I'm a drummer too but suspect the wife's crafting will take priority. Besides the acoustic kit takes up a lot more room LOL.

Saw a really nice crafting nook on the HC380/381 Facebook page. But don't give the wife any ideas........

When you say "built it", does that include the double desk? Or did you buy the desk and build amenities around it?

It looks like a great setup and would be great for us and what we need. I wasn't too keen on adding more storage, but she does have a LOT of craft stuff. Maybe it would be a good thing to have a place to hide (I mean store) it.
