New Truck and Stuff
My wife and I have just finished buying a new truck and we are in the process of equipping it. We ended up buying a GMC 3500 HD diesel, basically with the works included. We added the B&W Companion hitch and will soon install a Retrax MX1 tonneau cover.
The point of my post here is to thank the many people who provided information in helping us reach our decisions. There is simply no way I could have figured out so many variables and I am grateful to everyone who helped us.

You basically have the same truck we have, although ours is a 2015. Single rear or dually? We have single rears. Ours is loaded to the max as well. All the bells and whistles. LOVE the exhaust brake. You'll find that the engine needs to be up around 2000 RPM or better for it to work really well. You also have just a bit more horsepower than we do, due to the ongoing battle between GM and Ford over who has the "biggest stick" around!! We get 10.5 to 12.5 MPG pulling the fiver, depending on conditions. 22 to 24 MPG empty and open road driving. Did you get it through the Costco end of year sales special? That's what we did, two years ago. REALLY good deal. Good price, AND a $400.00 Costco gift card too!

TAKPAK, we went through a local dealer.
Can I ask you, when do you engage the exhaust brake switch? In other words, do you turn it on at the beginning of your trip or only when you intend to use it and really, what is it used for; better stopping power?

Wayne, The exhaust brake is a set of variable vanes in the turbo. To prevent sticking of the vanes, I turn on the exhaust brake every time I drive my vehicle.
While I have a Cummins engine, the exhaust brake is the same thought, a variable vane turbo.
Make it a part of your start up, put into tow-haul, turn on exhaust brake.

While I don't turn the brake on every time, I do when I get to steep hills. They are just fantastic and I don't usually use that word about anything!! I think I went from Kallispell, Mt. to Mesa, Az and had to use my regular brakes on the highway once (other than actually stopping).

When towing, keep the switch on. Non-towing, no need.

Great truck, enjoy. Wish I had an exhaust brake. Ford finally got a real one. Tow haul mode is fair...but it aint an exhaust brake.

Just seen a video of the new Chevy/GMC 2017 coming out, new engine with what GM says are significant upgrades and changes. The HP & Torque ratings are crazy at around 440HP and 950lbs so it should be a monster. Going to be interesting to see if there are any issues with new engine or the tranny given the ratings. Might have to upgrade in the fall after some reviews in real use this spring/summer. Anyone have one yet ???

Great truck ours is similar one of the great additions was a extra fuel tank in the bed it allows us to fill up when we are not hooked up.

I turn on the exhaust brake at all times while towing. Very rarely have to touch the brakes when on the downhill side of mountainous terrain. I love my dually except when we are sightseeing in a small touristy area looking for a parking space! I have found the 36 gallon factory tank to be adequate...I never fill while towing. But, I also never go more than 300 miles a day.

Steve, You would love more range. We also only do 300 mile days, but my 10mpg and 36 gal made me stop at times when I did not want to. Installed a 60 gal RDS (which really holds 50-55 gal) problem fixed.

I installed the rds 60 gal. tank and it held 58 gals. I don't fuel with rv either. Very seldom get into the main tank. My aux. tank is tied directly into my main tank so if i see my fuel tank move off the full mark then i know my aux. tank is empty.This is one of the best add on's i've done. I have driven over 600 miles in one day but that is rare but 4 or 500 miles is not.
