dropping landline

We have been receiving such good cell service that we are considering dropping our land line. I am trying to decide the best way of letting everyone know. Any suggestions?

When we dropped our land line it wasn't necessary to do anything. Anyone that we wanted to speak with already had our cell numbers by then. Actually stopped a lot of unwanted calls!

We just cancelled it. If people want to get in touch with you and don't have the cell, they'll get out the pen and paper.

We dropped ours about 8 years ago. I can't remember how we let folks know. I sure like not having it. Now when someone wants to talk with DW they call her cell, when they want me they call mine.

We ported the number to a cell phone for CountryGuy. He did not have a cell at that time. Took care of two issues at once.

Dick, that is easy! Especially if you have had your home phone number for several years. We did away with our landline 5 or 6 years ago and had our home phone number ported over to one of the cell phones Gail and I carry. Now, no matter where we are, we are always home. Haven't quite figured out whether or not that's a good thing!

In rural areas folks have done it for years even in S&B's. When we went we just went. As previously mentioned, those who we wanted to talk to already knew our number and the others we had business with had our email address.

In our case Dick, we went into our Verizon store and told them what we wanted to do. They said "no problem"! Several minutes later....we was walking out of the store. Don't remember if it cost anything at the time.

If you are not keeping your land line number Verizon will refer calls to a number of your choice for 90 days. least they did when I worked there,,,, been a while, that could cost money now too since they like to nickel and dime you now.....

Dick, Porting is where you take your number with you. This is different than forwarding. You can have your home number ported to a landline or cell anywhere in the country. I had a friend who had his 10 digit home number from Kansas City become his home number in Californa. Many people have ported their home number to their cell phone. Not sure how it works if you already have an existing cell phone. I think your cell can only have one number assigned to it but then I've been out of the industry for a while. Your cell provider should be able to answer any questions you have. Jim

Some good advice here.
As suggested, speak with your cell carrier. They should have the current info on how to do this.
We will be be discontinuing our land line in April and go to strictly cell phones. We will be abandoning our current land line number. Too many solicitation/political/sales/unwanted callers have that number. I'm also getting an app that will enable me to establish a "white list" of phone numbers of people I will accept calls from. All others will go to voice mail and I'll decide later if I want to add them to my "white list" or just delete their voice mail.

Good advice from all. Thank God the elections are over so I am forwarding my landline to my cell. I will email all my friends to let them know and start notifying doctors and make profile changes.

We haven't had a land line since we returned to Ohio in 2000. In fact our last stick house wasn't even wired for a land line. Wireless has served us well and since we've started full timing we've only been in a couple locations so far with weak coverage.

Same here, and, if you send Christmas cards, you can put a note in there.

Same here have not had a land line for nearly 10 years. Text those you want to have your number.

When we went into retirement 5 years ago, looked at every bill we had. The land line went first. Never missed it, the only thing I didn't realize is that once you ported your land line number to the cell carrier, you are no longer listed in the local phone directory. Never missed it, the people who needed to know, knew!
