Glue Residue remaining after removing Decals

I have removed peeling decals from my Montana, but I'm having a terrible time getting the glue residue left. It balls up, so I just move it around. I need to get all the glue off before I can get new decals put on. Does anyone have suggestions?

Try GOO GONE (get it at Walmart) then rubbing alcohol to clean before installing. If it is cold this may not work either.

There are more expensive solutions that don't work any better.

Good suggestion, I also use WD-40 on adhesives

I picked up some stuff from the sign folks here in town that worked great, I'm sure most such shops would have some. Don't know the name of the product, just told him what I was doing and he fixed me up with some. Have fun.

Try some Isopropyl (Rubbing) Alcohol. It's a very good solvent for removing adhesives.

I used Goo-Gone with very good results, however a word of caution, it is petroleum based which is listed by the graphic manufacturer as a no-no. I kept a towel handy and made sure that no excess goo-gone ran down the rig onto other graphics.

Go to a sign shop that does vinyl graphics and buy a couple of their handheld vinyl application squeegees.

1. Wipe or spray on your choice of adhesive remover, wait awhile and use the squeegee to "scrape" up the adhesive goop (orient squeegee like using a straight razor). This is the most efficient way to get the goop off of the surface. Get as much of the goop off as you can. Depending on how good you are at this step, you may not have to repeat it.

2. Repeat the application of adhesive remover and wipe down vigorously with a clean rag. Frequently fold the rag to use a clean area of the rag. When you run out of clean parts of the rag, discard it, don't reuse it. Otherwise, you will transfer goop to other areas of the trailer surface. Repeat as necessary.

3. When you are satisfied that all of the adhesive has been removed, finish up with a wipe-down of alcohol on a lint-free cloth.

4. Apply new graphics.


You can get the adhesive off by only using rags, but you will use tons more of the adhesive remover and tons more of rags.

Just trust me on this one, get the squeegees! I do quit a bit of vinyl graphics removal and re-application for my wife's sign business.

Try using a mixture of 1/4 laquer thinner and 3/4 paint thinner - put in a spray bottle. Have lots of paper towels handy -- spray mixture on and wipe off well as it softens up. Use lots of paper towels and make sure you get it all off. Remaining glue is dissolved in the mixture and will run down the side of the rv. This was the method recommended by the local graphics company --- he told me how to strip off the graphics. I stripped off the old ones and he installed the new graphics. (He also had me strip off the decals using a heat gun first).
