Full hookups
Going on a semi permanent assignment in northern Louisiana. We will have full hook ups and I was just wanting to know what everyone's opinion is on gray and black tank dumping. Leave closed and dump every few days? Or leave open all the time?
We need your expertise.

We keep them closed and dump when needed usually every two or three days. I mean all you have to do is pull a couple of handles.

My wife and I spend 4 months in Florida, and everyone there leaves their gray tank 1 open . They keep black tank and gray tank 2 closed until it's time to dump. We done that for years and it works fine.

If you leave black tank open you will have problems. It will build a waste pyramid over time, not pleasant to clean

When leaving your tank valves open, your rig becomes a vent for the campground's sewer system. If you can't create a trap in your waste hose by having a sufficient dip to trap waste water which will block sewer gas, it is best to leave all the valves closed, and dump as needed. It is quite obvious when walking around a campground where there are waste valves open.

Leave them closed until ready to dump. Don't dump black too often. Let it get to 3/4 or so full before dumping. Dumping black too soon can be almost as bad as leaving valve open. We full time and use our own facilities all the time and only have to dump black every two weeks. Your mileage may vary!

We leave they grey valve open until the black tank is nearing ready to dump. Then I will close the grey valve for a shower or two to build enough water to flush the sewer hose after dumping the black. More than once I found myself standing in an inch or two of water in the shower at night because the grey tank was full. Had to put clothes back on and go outside to dump it. Having a washer/dryer can fill it unexpectedly and I sure don't want it to fill while the washer is draining.
All my grey and galley drains have traps so sewer gases do not come back inside.

I agree with rohrmann...also I have heard of bugs and rodents in the park sewer system coming up an open valve and getting in the tank.

Blacks closed, empty every 10 days (we fulltime). Gray closed for a day prior to have the water to flush lines.

I also leave grey open until I am getting close to needing to dump the black tank. Then as stated before close the grey and some dish washing and a couple of showers or laundry and then you can dump the grey and flush the black tank residue out of your hose.

We leave everything closed and dump every 7 days. Works for us and have plenty of gray water for flushing out the drain lines and sewer hose.

The real key is if you have a washer and or dish washer. With the water they put out leaving the grey tanks closed is asking for trouble.
