Skylight Broken, Repaired with Photos

I was walking across the yard yesterday when I noticed a sewer vent leaning to one side on the camper roof. When I went to investigate it I discovered a lot more to my surprise. I straightened up a total of two vents that I had found leaning and fortunately I will be able to get by with those at least for now. I believe this to be the result of a low tree branch from our last trip.

Here is the repair work I done on the skylight. This is basically how it was recommended to make the repairs while I was at the dealership.

First I removed all the old sealant and the broken skylight.

Next I placed a layer of the rolled up putty tape/sealant around the opening for a seal underneath the edge of the new skylight where it would be located.

The next step was to place the new skylight over the tape sealant. I started placing the screws back into the same holes where they came from working my way from side to side as I worked from one end to the other. I used the same holes where I could but I had to re-start new holes along the bottom edge near the edge of the roof. The screws all had a fairly snug fit when I put them back in.

The last step was to overlay some Dicor Lap Sealant Non-Leveling Non-Sag sealant. This is what the RV dealership recommended in the parts dept. It had to be specific for the skylight due to the reaction of the materials. He wanted to sell me one tube but I purchased two tubes instead and used most of it. The sealant started to set up fairly quickly so I had to work with it and then stop. I couldn't keep going back touching it up over & over where it was setting up. As mentioned it wasn't the self-leveling sealant but it did work well using a plastic putty knife.

At last the finished product.

The total cost was less than $100.00. Maybe if Donna doesn’t find me handsome perhaps she will at least find me handy!

looks good Bill! I like the black plastic vs. the clear, keeps from having to cover the thing to keep the light out!

They called it a smoke color when I bought it.

Great job! Thanks for the pictures. Replacing the clear with "smoke" is on my list of things I'd like to do. Now I'm not afraid to do it.

Yep, sure have we loved to watch that show; it sort of hits home here in KY. Did you notice in repairing the skylight I didn’t even use any duct-tape?
