Back to the point. I ordered the Winegard 1000 router. I went to AT&T and Verizon. I asked the same question. I need a sim card for the unit and a data plan. Deer in head lights..... So frustrating! Anyone?

Only football I follow is college ball and an occasional SeaHawks game. NFL ruined it IMHO.

I'm really getting mixed messages. The only reason for the Winegard 1000 would be to have a stronger more reliable WIFI signal. Now I'm told that is the case but your speed drops drastically! So much that you can't stream? Can anyone shed some light on this. I can't get any straight answers.

And can an admin change the thread title so we can stopping about football and stay on topic?

I'm amazed how easy our Starlink has been to use. Everywhere we have stopped, be it rest areas, truck stops, camp grounds and parking lots we have not had one time we couldn't link up and go online. Wife has used it extensively for conducting her zoom classes for her employment as a professor at a local university back home. I use it to watch NASCAR races, movies, SeaHawk games and recorded stuff on my xfinity account.

Well I feel like a ping pong ball. I'm sending back the Gateway. The data plans are ridiculously expensive. $80 to $90 for 50 gigs. I'm not about to pay that when currently using the Monty 12-15 times a year. I'm thinking DTV wins. If I can't hot spot internet for streaming I'll watch DTV. Now Carl I'm going to need to pick your brain.

Tony, we have the Winegard Gateway. We are Verizon phone customers but bought a T Mobile plan. We get 100gb for $50/month. I have the Alcatel mifi hotspot (purchased from T-Mobile. We stream via our Amazon Firestick. Our mifi is the internet source to the Winegard Gateway. The Gateway broadcasts the SSID I assigned to all my devices - Firestick, Alexa, phones, tablets, smart plugs, In Command, etc. Just checked the speed and we are at 8.22 mbps. Plenty fast to stream. Look me up at rally. You can get better, but the T-Mobile is the cheapest I have found. StarLink will be much better, but almost 3x the cost. I’m already paying for phone and internet at the house (no cell service there but our T-Mobile hotspot works there. There is also Visible, which many RVers use. I believe it is capped around 5 mbps (may be a little higher). That is unlimited.

Just for clarification, you do not need a SIM card with the Winegard Gateway. It will accept any internet source - SIM, WiFi, or Ethernet.

Ahhh... could you please be a bit more clear? Are you saying it doesn't need a sim to be a WIFI amplifier? And now I'm more confused

Try Visible to get a SIM that will fit the Winegard router. and it is unlimited data but managed, so your speed may vary. However, the Winegard router is only 2.4g So it's not the fastest. I went the Starlink route, Now I have plenty of bandwidth for streaming TV and WIFI for the laptops. It also provides me with a link to monitor the rig when we are away. With the Victron connect app I can see my entire solar/inverter system in realtime from anywhere, as well as our security cameras. $135 for the RV program. We have had good results with Starlink for 2 months now, we usually see 30MBPS speeds. Sometimes higher and sometimes lower. But it has been good for us. We are fulltimers so it is worth the money!

We also went the Starlink route. It has worked very well for us. I looked at the winegard and decided to wait until Starlink was enabled for RV's. The Starlink for RV's has the ability to stop the service if you are not using it for a few months. Then start it again when you want. We get speeds usually around 30-100 Mbps and sometimes in the evening it goes below 30. But we can stream anything we want. It is very easy to setup also. Took about 5 or 10 minutes.

I appreciate that but I'm not a full timer so Starlink is not an option. I'll check T mobile

My solution for streaming is using the Winegard Gateway with a SIM card. I have an Apple TV device on one TV and FireTV on the other. Both works good enough for our needs. Thanks to another user I learned that I could just add the SIM card as another device to my existing mobile data plan for $20/month. That price point was acceptable to me since we aren't full time either. With AT&T you order an iPad SIM. I just inserted it, switched in the app and it worked.

If you haven't purchased the Winegard GW1000, take a look at the Winegard Osprey Model: WR-SPRY they released this year. For $60 more you get a more up to date device. It also compatible with the 360 antenna.

I received my winegard 1000 today. I plan to shop a pay as you go phone plan with data. Try to keep it under $50 a month. My understanding is you can turn it off and on any time you want with no fees.



I met a couple last weekend while staying at Bodega bay. They have a 2019 Legacy. I stopped and chatted with him for a bit. He said he was a member here but I can't find him. Mike and Angie I believe. Anyway he said he has a 100gb for $55 plan from AT&T.



Can anyone recommend a similar plan that will work with the Winegard?

I have the T-Mobile plan for $50/month for 100gb, but I can’t turn it on/off. I chose to use a MiFi because I can take it anywhere if needed vs a SIM card.

By the way, Verizon, ATT and T-Mobile SIM cards all work. I believe it takes the iPad size cards. Another option is Visible. It is $40/month or less. It is a full featured phone but also unlimited hotspot. Many MOC members using it. It is an online Verizon company.

Update, I received the gateway and spent a week talking to ATT, Verizon, T mobile etc. Ended up with T-Mobile 100Gb for $50. I spent 2 hours in 100 degrees installing the gateway only to find out it's defective! Sending it back to Amazon and buying it from my dealership. It's $80 more from them but at least I have someone to yell at if it doesn't work

Update to the update! IT WORKS


So funny story.... I installed the router that I got on Amazon last night. I checked and double checked everything except...... wait for it.....the leads plugged into the multi meter....they were reversed. That explains the spark I was getting when I plugged it in.....
