Define old guy.

All I know is there's an awful lot of people towing overweight. Buddy of mine just bought a brand new Grand Design 5th wheel 17000 lb gross weight towing it with a three quarter ton GMC truck with a 1900 pound payload. Just the pin weight of the empty fiver is double his payload.

Aren't Old Guys ex Young Guys who have learned a thing or two in their additional years of experience?
Aren't Young Guys pre Old Guys who still have things to learn?

This Old Guy doesn't think every 5er needs a dually. But I have learned over the years that the numbers are the numbers, and numbers don't lie. Use good old fashioned math and choose truck and trailer wisely. That's all

Unless you use numbers to suite what you are selling. Every body does it finance guy RV guy DRW owners everybody. I look at the white sticker and determine axle rating load rating on tires and go from there. weigh the truck to see how much the rear of the trucks weighs and tow accordingly.

but hey to each there own. Everybody is ether a lawyer or a cop. I do not own a weight police jacket.

I didn’t specify but I did have our camping gear onboard but no food drinks or clothes. Also being a 4 wheel drive with the B&W Companion gooseneck & 5th wheel slider hitch does not help with axle weight. Also being gas lowers the GVWR of the truck vs diesel

One of those threads where if you followed it first before buying a 5’er’ and a truck you’d be looking at condo’s instead. So many things I never knew over the past 20 years of pulling, I’m counting my blessings to be alive. Thinking maybe I should be looking at a new Freightliner or Kenworth.

This is not difficult. The specifications of the truck will determine if it will tow the RV WITHIN the trucks specifications. If that is unimportant then hook up and go.

The Carry capacity of the truck is overlooked in many cases.

Nice truck. That should be damn near capable of towing anything you put behind it.
But I got to say what were them g m engineers smoking when they designed that front end ?

The GMC is better looking in my mind. I've heard of some issues with the Ford/GM 10 speed.

It always seems to be the same whenever the proper size truck question is asked. Those that are overweight with their 3/4 ton trucks scream it tows just fine. Those with the 1 ton SRW that are overloaded say well only part of the truck is overloaded. Those with the 1 ton dually already know that they are with in all of their weight ratings. Then you have the ones without a 1 ton dually being sarcastic and claiming that you need a full fledged over the road Kenworth or Freightliner. Okay being extra safe is fine, actually it is much better than towing more than your tow vehicle is designed to tow. Yes I do have plenty of truck but surely I would be happy with a medium duty Freightliner, can I get that with four wheel drive? I would be happy to drive that and if necessary I would build a separate shop if it wouldn’t fit in my garage. Just saying, but really I want to say happy and safe roads to you, your family and the other drivers we share our highways and byways with.

Tom

You forgot to add how some dually owners adopt a holier-than-thou attitude and preach to all the lesser folk who don't have one, all the while pretending there are no disadvantages to them

My last 3 trucks were SRW, but the 3 before that were DRW pickups. They each have their advantages and their disadvantages, and there is not a single right answer that works for everyone in every case.

I completely agree that we all need to stay safe and happy out there. Our rigs are great escape vehicles, whether for a weekend, or fulltime. Let's all enjoy our truck and trailer, whatever choice we make!

Brad

The simple right answer is that the truck is within the specifications to pull your RV.

I'll second that since it is the only correct answer.
