When mine gets bad, I will have it coated with LineX. I like it better than Rhino.

Line x another good lead. I have Lin X in the bed of my 08 F-350. My question is will Line X or Rhino stick to a gel coat finish???

Capt Joe. I am looking at your picture of the rig and that is a long way from the rear wheels of the HDT to the front panel of the Montana. Do you not get any chips..

Yes in regard to sticking on gel coat. Front of my Komfort was sprayed. Also note the body shops have access to various products. My trailer got damaged in parking accident. After repair they sprayed right over gel coat! My friend still owns my old trailer. Looks new and never loss it's shine after 4 years. We had it done in exact white tint to match Gel Coat. It was about $350.00 to have done. Most likely more now, but they even went over the seems in front cap. Stuff is bullet proof! We even coated the fiberglass propane tank covers!

Rich, you're definitely not the only one with chips. Our 2 month old 3100 has been on 2 trips, and I have chips clear up on the nose cap! Crazy! I'm going to look in to a 3M coating to protect it from the bugs and rocks. We probably have 25-50 chips as delivered from the factory, and whatever I added on the two trips. I have the rock tamers, but I also have chips...go figure. Touch up and a film appliqué will probably be my solution. It's expensive, but I'll probably be happier in the long run.

I must be one of the blessed, I guess. Just completed our trip to New Orleans which probably puts our total mileage on the new rig at about 5000 miles. I inspected the front closely and at present (double knock on wood) we have no chips that have appeared. We use the Towtector system which is more of a mustache appearing flap (double bristles) and it seems to be working as advertised.
It makes me wonder if a hard flap system actually deflects the rocks or gravel causing the damage at speed back up to the nose cap, where possibly the bristles slow the gravels, etc. to where they just drop and pass beneath the rig? I don't know for sure, but I do believe I can now report that we are satisfied with the Towtector system.

Bingo, I don't know if the hard flap system would cause more debris to come back on the front or not. I just completed almost 1,300 miles with the Rock Tamers and no marks on the front. I had a good coat of wax on it but I wouldn't think that would stop it from getting chips. How about SRW vs DRW? Is there more junk thrown back toward the Monte from 4 tires?

1100 miles back from Florida with the Rock tamers and we count 15 Chips. I don't get it there has to be a answer as to why some get chips and others do not. We talked to the rock tamer folks and even sent pictures. They say the installation looks good and also say the tamers will not prevent some chips.
I just don't get it.

Quite possible regarding the DRW. Ours is DRW, but I have noticed that the back coverage from the Towtector seems to leave less exposure at the hitch itself compared to the Rock Tamer systems I have seen installed. The exposed area in the middle on our flaps is only about three inches wide. I am thinking the Rock Tamers have a wider opening between the flaps?

There is a larger gap between the flaps on the tamer system however our chips are directly behind the flaps and lower on the front panel. JandC does not get chips. Others do not get chips. The only logical conclusion is that I am doing something wrong.

Rich, out of curiosity, what is the ground clearance to the bottom of the flaps when you are hooked up? Wonder if that may account for something? I think ours is about 3-4 inches from the bottom of the bristles to the road surface which is actually a little more than is recommended.

yes Bingo..Good thought. Our flaps are as recommended which is 3-4 inched off the road when 5th wheel is hooked up. I am going on the premise that there is something not right with the installation. I asked them for a certified installation facility nearby and that is our next move.

Ok, after all this concern I had to count my chips. I have over 10000 miles on the camper and have seven chips big enough to count, three of which are about 1/8" in size. The rest to small to be concerned about. My mud flaps are standard GMC flaps up 12 "s from the pavement. And I travel the NE roads a lot.
So I can't imagine what's going on with Rich's rig.

No it's 1/8" wide not deep. Well, the depth of the paint.

That is what I mean/1/8 inch wide is a lot of white showing. I feel better none of mine are that wide.

I am just trying to throw out some more ideas here, but are you absolutely sure your chips aren't some type of defect in the paint or gelcoat that is just now showing up?

the primary suspect is defective paint. Hope the dealer can give a opinion.
