blown tire damage

I had 2 right side tires blow on the interstate & lost the plastic fender skirt & sustained damage to a piece of metal (called a wrap) that's located between the fender skirt & entry door. A local/small RV repair shop has quoted $325+s&h for an OEM pewter (correct color) fender skirt from Keystone. I found a black (color) fender skirt with correct dimensions from elcro.com for $197+s&h. After I pay the deductible, our insurance company will be paying the rest. I know most of you don't like replacing parts with OEM. Your thoughts. Should I tell the repair shop to go with OEM or not?

I had a very good experience with Good Sam Roadside Assistance. They contacted a local Goodyear Commercial dealer (at 7:00 pm when all other stores are closed). They told me someone would be at my location within 2 hrs & he was. At exactly 2 hrs, the Good Sam RA contacted me to see if someone had shown to assist me.

Since I had (80# psi) Chinese tires on the left side, I had to go with Goodyear Endurance LR E tires. Now I've replaced the left side tires with Endurance also. We'll replace these LR G tires when the Endurance wear out.

I recommend that you keep a record of the date the tires were replaced. From your signature, it looks like you have a 2016 Monty. I would assume the tires are approaching 3 years of age(probably older if the tire mfg date is used). My 13 years of experience for our travel of about 4000 towing miles/year and sitting in storage about 8-9 month, is that tires will start failing after 3 years. I now replace my Goodyear tires (rated at 85mph) every 3 years. It is my plan--recommend you develop one also. Also get a good TPMS installed. My 2006 Monty weight about 12,500 lbs fully loaded for travel. Empty weight about 10,200 lbs. Yours may be higher so the correct tires are critical.

Yes, Monty & tires are 3 yrs old. Tires didn't have that many miles on them, I think they got sun baked. I have covered my new Goodyears with white covers. I guess even with covers I need to change tires every 3 yrs.

Yes, covers will help. I always cover mine tires when in storage. The Texas sun is tough on tires.

Very sorry for your tire troubles. Most of us have been there.....

Great to know you got such good service from GS roadside assistance!
The GY Endurance is a good tire but still only an 'E' rated tire.
Depending on your per year mileage, loaded weight, etc, I would want to upgrade them before the 5 year mark.

As for the fender skirt, I would want both sides to match.
That being the case, the $$ may go with the dealer/insurance.

I don't know where you got the impression that 'we' don't like to replace OEM parts with OEM parts????

Anyway, regardless of what is done on the one side the other side should match too...push insurance to pay for both sides.

Thanks mazboy. I’ll make sure the fender skirts match. I just assumed they would so now I’ll make sure

We do a lot of miles. We have the TST system. We visually check the tires on a regular basses. We purchase quality tires. We are on the 2nd set of G6 14 tires on our 2013 3402

QR35TR G4
14PR
I run 95 psi cold and have the TST TPMS and to keep an eye on them when running down the road.

I blew my first tire last year, after 35 years of pulling trailers. My also damaged the camper exactly like yours did. I used OEM fender, new molding, and the wrap. RV repair was $1350, plus 4 new tires. I’m on the 3 year tire replacement plan.

Trekwood has the exact OEM fender in the color you need for $190.00 also they have the skirt $122.00. The problem with the skirt is shipping because of length very pricey to ship it. The fender is reasonable.

Mike: We were trying to decide whether to involve insurance or not. I researched the body parts that were damaged. Parts would not have been Keystone & may not match the left side (undamaged) of the Monty. Anyway, I discovered my 74.75' fender skirt would cost $200+shipping. My insurance (NGIC) would only allow 21% of the cost of repairs with a local (small) RV repair shop. Now we're waiting for a quote from CW who owns NGIC to see if insurance will allow a little more money. I'm paying insurance premiums, I feel they should do a little more than just 21%

I recommend Michelin XPS Ribs or Bridgestone Durarvis R250 as heavy/sturdy tires. None have failed me so far.
However, I lost an entire WHEEL last summer and I had to cut my Skirt Wrap off as half was peeled away (its just thin aluminum so utility knife worked well to cut it. Plastic Fender was in small pieces. Local repair shops did not have any wrap in the same shape or length and suggested I just pound out the bent portion I cut off. I was able to do so to my satisfaction on my garage floor and purchased a new plastic fender from ICON (my second one over the years). The re-installed skirt wrap joint got some extra flat head "button" screws and a piece of white Duct Tape. Not so pretty close up but fine from any distance.
And a very inexpensive DIY fix.
Good Luck!

Neither you nor your insurance should be on-the-hook for the costs of your loss. My brother-in-law had the same problem as you, so he called the Chinese tire manufacturer (Goodyear) and they reimbursed the cost for new tires and damage repairs.

RRmann, I thought about doing repairs myself. the 14' piece of metal on the slideout would be easy to flatten out and besides, a new fender skirt would hide the damage. I would only need a piece of "J" wrap next to the entry door, but can't find one online.

Carl, Keystones Chinese tires were the ones that blew. It was a Goodyear mechanic who came to the rescue on the side of the road & replaced the blown tires with Goodyear Endurance. We replaced the undamaged tires on the left side with Goodyear Endurance. NGIC (insurance) won't cover tires (I already asked).

margerush, if you're interested go to the Goodyear website and explain what happened and your cost. That's all my BIL did.
