Theft proofing a 5er
Forgive me if this question has been addressed somewhere in this forum but if it has I haven’t found it….
Our #3 5er sits on 10 acres in NM. The road to the Montana is secured by a chain and a lock across the road. Recently I have been reading about a lot of Rv thefts and am somewhat concerned about this rig. Wife is very concerned.
What type of devices or locks are available to secure this rig? My best idea is to simply remove the pin box and hide it as we will probably never move this rig.

Set it up on blocks like a mobile home and pull the wheels.

Removing the pinbox is a good deterrent.

You don’t worry about someone breaking into your home and killing you or being in a bad wreck or the thousands of things that could happen because they are so remote. Same thing with your camper. Someone could steal your camper but what are the chances of that?
Enjoy your camper and don’t worry about it. If it should happen that is what your insurance is for.

Just take 2 wheels off one on each side and tell the wife "Never going to happen now", more likely to break in and steal the tv`s. Not many thieves have the capability or truck to steal a 5er. They look for bumper pulls, hook up and go. And with what`s going on down you know where that is going to get worse.

Most of the 5th wheel thefts out here on the west coast are toy haulers, and not travel trailers, because they're loaded down with expensive side by sides, motorcycles and sand cars. I wouldn't worry about it. Put a kingpin lock on it and lock the wheels together, and have full coverage.

Before blocking up or taking the wheels off, I would check with your County Tax Office. Blocked up or wheels off might change how the property is accessed.
Just something to check into.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and ideas! I cannot remove the wheels as it would then be considered a mobile home which is not allowed (restrictive covenants) and it would also raise the taxable value of the property.
I don’t care, at his point in time, to block up the rig and essentially get the wheels off he ground. Too much work at this point in my life….
I am not insured on this rig as it is hideously expensive because this is our #3 Rv and we are in a high fire danger area.
By pulling off the pin box, I am not spending any money to purchase locks, etc. so that will probably be my solution!

I use a Ft. Knox lock while in storage.

Stay away from the the tumbler pin lock key (the round key), easiest one to pick with the right tool.

I wouldn't remove the pin box because you may need to make a quick move of it due to fire.

I was raised on the premise that locks are for honest people. If a thief really wants it, he'll get it. Do what you feel is reasonable to secure it and leave the worries behind. I must say though, if you remove the pin box, as long as you don't lay it on the ground under the trailer, I don't think you have to worry about it getting towed away.

On our one rig that we leave in KS we use a pin lock and also have locks on the between the wheel chocks.
