Coroplast screws

Hi all, question for anyone who has replaced the nails holding the coroplast in place with screws... what sized screws work and are they self tapping?

Thanks much

ALL sheet metal screws are by design self tapping...
What you are referring to are called TEK screws... they are self drilling as well as self tapping

The TEK screws on our rig, which is older than the ones that used the nails for the coroplast, are 1/4" X 1" TEK screws. I have had the entire front sheet of coroplast down years ago to repair a cracked gray tank, and I had a number of the factory installed TEK screws break which I replaced with new ones.

Due to my recent rodent issue I became proficient in this process. Here is how I did it. Based on the condition of the heads of my rivets I wouldn't wait long as some had significant corrosion. Had I waited much longer there wouldn't have been much to get ahold of. The procedure is pretty simple.

First you have to get the plastic off the head of the rivet. This is what's underneath. Just clamp onto the head with vice grips and twist. They'll come right out.

This is what I went with:

The finished product:

The self drilling part of the screws did not work as the steel of the I beam proved to be too thick and stout. After twisting the heads off of two screws which fortunately I was able to get out with vice grips I drilled the holes slightly larger (11/64). Worked perfectly. Don't cheap out on your drill bit. This is thick steel. I'm a big fan of DEWALT.

I had 4 different trailers, 3 travel trailers and the fifth wheel. I have never been able to use self-taping screws on the trailer frame. I've always had to pre-drill a hole that was slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Then the self tapping screw would cut it's own thread.

FYI, the screws on the bottom of mine are those little bitty things, and no washers. All of them have broken out leaving the colorplast dangling. I've replaced almost all of the original screws and used the largest washers I could find at the time.

I also added more screws and sealed up the places where the colorplast had gaps.

And the J-trim on the edges are pathetically installed. The metal around those screws broke out too, leaving the J trim dangling as well. I used new screws, and the largest washers I could find, because they cut the edge of the J trim so close, there was only about a 1/4 inch from the edge of the hole to the edge of the metal J trim.

So shoddy!

Found some of mine are the same. That's next.

I have a 2013 model Monte and it is pre-rivet for securing the coroplast. I took the self tapping screws out and added fender washers to the screws and reinstalled them. No problems and that coroplast has been down numerous times. Oh, while you have the coroplast down, take some cable ties and bundle up the wires and laying in the belly and tie up some of them and the hydraulic lines also. Take pressure off that coroplast then too.

Factory installed. Since I've taken that photo, I started carrying a few other objects on that rack too. Works great to carry stuff, but kind of a chore to undo the end and slide that rack out. Still, it works great!

Don't buy the Coroplast screws at Home Depot, the metal is too soft to go thru the frame. Go to a hardware store. I bought some from Ace that would drill and tighten where the box stripped.
