tonneau cover

I will be getting my hitch next week for my 2001 F-250 SD Short bed. I currently have a hinged fiberglass tonneau. I would like to use a soft roll up style to use when I'm not towing my RL3400. My question is will it cover with the hitch in my bed when its not attached to the fifthwheel or do I have to remove the hitch before the tonneau will work. Thanks.

I have a 2002 F250 longbed with a Reese 16K. I purchased a truxedo (www.truxedo.com) from www.truckcandy.com. I leave my hitch in the truck all the time and only have to pull the handle down to keep it from rubbing on my tonneau. Look at the warranty of cover, and I couldn't find anything that beat the Truxedo. I liked it so much I have it on my wife's Supercrew and I bought the cheaper version (truxsport) for my son's F150.

We have the XTang cover on our short bed GMC. Go to there web site. Ours covers the bed and Signature series 18K Reese hitch on a slider. The reason we went with the Xtang was that it came with the braces stitched in the fabrick and used industrial strength velcro to secure the sides. No more snaps. When not using the 5th wheel, I cover the back to protect the hitch and storage box that is in the bed. When the cover is out, the bed is completely covered and with no sags for water to collect in.

I have the Pace cover on my TV and I leave the hitch in the truck. They even advertise about covering the fifth wheel hitch.
(I know this cover is not what your looking for)
I think I was just trying to confirm that you dont have to remove your hitch.

Daryl. I have one of those other covers and they work great. To clear the hitch handle I use a bungee cord and wrap it around the handle to pull it down out of the way.Mine has snaps but that was only because I'm cheap! For some reason the handle on my Reese 16k slider sticks up when I'm not towing so that is why I use the bungee.

With my Reese 16K slider, I have to bungee it so it doesn't beat against the bottom of my Fold-A-Cover. When we installed the hitch, we turned the lever part way down and drilled a new hole for the cotter pin, so it sits partially turned down all the time and isn't in the way of the cover.

I mush also use a bungee to keep the handle from rubbing.

On the Reese, if the handle sticks up too high, you can remove the handle. It's held on by a cotter key. If you plan to remove it often you might want to replace the cotter key with an easier pin to remove. I saw a Reese where someone had fashioned a short handle as a replacement. That would work, too.

See another Montana or Mountaineer on the road? Flash lights twice, it might be one of us!

I have the 16K Reese. I see what you mean, Steve. I have the handle side bungied down at the current time. I need a cover, not sure what I want yet. I will follow this thread. Kinda like that TruXedo Plus mentioned with the attached tool box.

Does anyone have the tri-fold type of cover on a Long Bed? I was wondering how one of those would work - I have the soft type with snaps and bow bars. Hitch and handle clear but sometimes the snaps can be a pain. Really a tight fit. Shouldn't complain though - paid $40 dollars for it at a garage sale.

Steve R. I tried to turn my handle over and even drilled another hole at a 90deg angle but the fender well is in the way. That was the only problem with the sb using a slider hitch, but not enough to cause me to trade yet.

I have an American Rolling cover that I ordered from AutoAnything. It is really super and works great over the top of the hitch. I just pull the pin on the hitch handle and it rolls and locks to the back of the bed. It does not leak and will support 300 lbs of weight on it.

Hi, Thanks for your help. I've ordered my roll up velcro from www.truxedo. They had 3 or 4 wholesale places that I could choose from to order. No shipping $199.00 That price is better than what I could find in Columbus. Thanks Again!!

I inverted the handle on my 16K Reese with no problem have had since 1995. Just pulled the cotter and fliped it,

Thanks for the idea, Ken! I was just going to pull the cotter pin and take the handle off when using the cover.

Pound99, I think you'll like the Truxedo. It's made really well, and the customer service is really good. I couldn't find anything else out there with a lifetime warranty when I got mine. Also, it's pretty easy to install....takes about 30 minutes the first time as you figure it out, but gets shorter with practice. Make sure you keep the rail on the truxedo the same heighth as the bedrail on the truck. Good luck, I think you'll enjoy it.

Craig, what was your impression of the Truxedo Plus (toolbox plus cover)?

Dave, I've never seen a Truxedo Plus. It came out after I bought both of my Truxedo's. I think it's a great idea and if I can to do over again would probably get one. I am very impressed with the company and their service...they make a great product and stand behind it. I've had to get extra velcro for all three of my Truxedo's and they have always been friendly, prompt and free. I don't know how you can get better than that.

Thanks, Craig! I'll continue to look into this cover. $751 is lowest so far...
