Ford muddies the water SRW vs DRW
I am in the camp that one should not exceed the GVWR. Which is why we went from a F350 SWR to a DRW.
Did some virtual window shopping and found this. It is interesting.
for 2020, found a F350 SWR with a GVWR of 12400 and a 3.55 rear end
Same dealer had a green sticker F350 DRW with a GVWR of 13000. 3.55 Rear end. Only 600 pounds more than the SRW.
The Blue stickered F350 DRW was still at 14000. It has the 4.10 rear end.
Had a SRW been out there with a 12400 rating that may have been the direction we would have gone.
Without DW, W/D and 46 Aux fuel tank were right at the 11400 our F350 srw was rated for. I do not think that what we have added would push usto another 1000 pounds to the GVWR.
Not sure if Ram and GM have followed the weight ratings

I can tell you from actual experience that my old Dodge speced a higher weight rating than you could buy single rear wheel tires for. Had to move up to get two tires on each side.

The 20 inch tires on my 08 F250 are rated for 3750 pounds.

My 14 Ram srw gvwr's at 12300 lbs. Not sure what the new ones rate.

You have been able to get the 13,000 lb. package on a DRW for a while. It could either be a pickup bed delete which gives the rating, or it is for insurance or registration purposes I think as some states the price goes up because of the 14,000 lb. rating. Also, a green sticker signifies a special order by the dealer, usually for a customer.

Any thoughts on the super wide singles that most of the newer Tractor Trailers are using. I've see a few (converted) around here in place of the dually's. I went from dually to single a few years ago (new truck) not converted.

Quite a few running singles now but not near "most". I would never run them again on a big rig. Before retiring from trucking I sat on an exit ramp close to downtown Atlanta for 8 hours waiting for a single replacement for one that blew out on my rig. There were none to be found in Atlanta area so one was brought from Chattanooga terminal.

I would find it surprising that the company would let you on the road without a spare, you don`t run with a spare of this size? Not sure I would want to change one but the tire center mobile truck certainly could.

Very few semi’s carry a spare. When you figure the cost of a spare for each tractor and trailer it’s much cheaper to just have road service provide one, as they are coming out to change it anyway. Not to mention the loss from theft. Your bigger companies will have their own tire shops and will provide the mobile guy with one of their own tires and then repair it at their shop if it’s repairable.

Rich please read my post. The carrying capacity of a truck rated at 12400 will be 1000 more than pretty much the same truch rated for only 11400

I have been frustrated by the GVWR issue for some time. I realize all kinds of inconsistencies exist. I'll keep this short. I was looking at 2020 F-350s and playing with an online build sheet. I see an SRW F-350 with a 10,000 GVWR and one with 11,400 GVWR. No one has explained the difference in the actual vehicles except those numbers happen to coincide with rules politicians in various states to tax vehicles as commercial or not.
Magically, 10,000 GVWR is on the F-250 as well. I've invited any factory engineer to tell me that the 10,000 GVWR F-350 is any different than the 11,400 GVWR F-350. So, if you're stopped in California with an F-350 registered and taxed as 10,000 GVWR and you are at 10,100#, the tax authorities are gonna get you. You could still be well under the safe maximum axle weight.
I probably have stirred up a hornet's nest.

Pulling 16,000# I just gave up and bought an f350 dually last year. My 2016 didn’t have the payload needed. 14k gvwr and 5598 payload. The f450 naturally had a lower payload or would have gone that route. The dually is still considered light duty for tags and insurance here.

We just went with 2020 f450 so I don’t have to worry about what’s behind it with in reason.

I went with the 350 dually as not what’s behind but in the truck. I like the turning radius of the 450 better but the higher payload of a comparable 350 is why I chose it.

CA doesn't register non-commercial trucks by weight. There is no tax authority to be concerned with. If your state requires weight stckers then be careful there.
