Disposing of tanks if you can't find someone that takes them:
Remove valve
Fill with water
Cut tank in half (while filled with water)
Take to a metal recycler

or if no saw use for target practice. and no they do not blow up. just get a large flame coming out the holes.
put hundreds of holes then to the scrap pile.
a metal recycler will not take them. because you do not have a couple tons they just do not even want you there.

I just had this same dilemma. My tanks were past the date (11-07) and when I went to get them filled a couple months ago in TX the guy checked the date and told me they were expired needed to be recertified or replaced. He filled it because it was a cold snap but let me know it was a one-time favor. I checked into getting them recertified and they wanted about $30 to do it and the closest place that did it was an hour away. Then I read that recertified ones are only good for five years and then need to be recertified again. So, I decided to just get new replacements. Each 30# tank was about $70. I ordered two Flamekings from Amazon, but they botched the order and I only got one. Then I learned that Worthington tanks are made in the US so I got the second one, a Worthington, from Lowes.

Try UHaul, that's where I fill up. Some will recertify. There's really nothing to it. Mostly they make sure you have the most current style valve on it, or else the tell you they are junk. Then they spray some leak test on the tank and valve. If it's all good, you get a new sticker for another 5 years. And in my neighborhood, the "trash gypsies " scour the streets the night before trash pick-up looking for any kind of junk metal.

ROFL! SO TRUE!
I hope this is the last year I have to deal with this -- I want to move to Texas this year, and I'm working on downsizing my condo and fixing it up to put up for sale. I've had enough of living in Northern Virginia.

Thank you for this post. I just started looking up where to fill my (much smaller) propane tank in my (much smaller) RV.
I'm new to NOVA. Tx is very tax friendly, good choice. (If you are 65 or over you don't have to pay property tax for your primary residence. Just an FYI for anyone who may read this thread)
I'm with you, get me outta here. (Side note, where is condo and how much?)
Again, thank you for the research and leg work.

Heck, turn it into a tung drum and sell for $100 if you're going to cut it!

Your claim that if you are 65 or over you don’t have to pay property tax on your primary residence is FALSE. You have taxes frozen at your current rate, and does nor apply to all taxes, such as hospital taxes. You still pay property taxes.

Personally I'd just replace it and be done with it.
12 years is a long time to amortize the cost.

The rules are complicated. You’re going to have different results from any supplier whether call on the phone or show up in person ready to purchase product, things work that way. I live in a rural area where we have many different places that sell propane and they all service tanks.
