King Pin Issues

Summary, Every time I accelerate from a stop or apply the brakes firmly I here a popping sound (like something is loose and moves then come in contact with somethine solid) coming from the Montana. I believe its coming from the connection between the trailer and truck.

My setup. On the trailer is a Moryyride King pin with an Anderson Kingpin to gooseneck adaptor. On the truck is a gooseneck 2 5/16" Ball in the factory gooseneck hitch with Attached Anderson 24K adaptor.

I've checked all of the visible bolts and set screws, all are tight. I removed the anderson adaptor from the trailer hitch and it appears to be fine.

I'm at a loss as how to proceed. Any suggestions are appreiated.

A picture of your actual hitch connected to the truck would be helpful

Currently the Anderson adaptor is disconnected. I will post a pic as soon as I am able to hitch the trailer again. Thx.

sometimes simple is better

I had this issue with the same setup at the time , lots of grease on the ball fixed it for me. I know it says you don`t need it but grease makes everything slide better and takes up the small gaps in the connection. And not just a little bit either, Red and Tackey grease is the best. The other time it made noise was when the connection to the truck moved a tiny bit and clunked when starting or stopping I put shims under the hitch at the connection points, worked for me.

My brother-in-law had this same issue and he installed a goose box ( I don’t know what brand). He says it salved his issue, and it rides and towes better than ever before.

I can agree with this statement. I've had 3 different hitches then went to the Resse goose box all issues and problems were solved, never going to use anything else.

I put a horse stall mat (from Tractor Supply in the bed of the truck prior to installing the Anderson hitch. Make sure you tighten all bolts to spec, then tighten them again when hitched to the trailer with load on the hitch. This will require loosening the two lower bolts to tighten the top (pull down) bolt, the re-tighten the lower bolts.
Make sure you get the Allen set screws on the trailer kingpin tightened to spec as well.
Grease on the ball does help.
Other than that, it could be the Morryde king pin moving somehow. Watch for abnormal movement when hooking up (changing load from trailer jacks to truck hitch).
FYI, I do like the Anderson hitch, but I am planning on switching to the Reese Goosebox when I can afford it.

Another Goosebox fan here. B&W makes a bullet proof hitch, bit it is very satisfying no lomger having chucking. Now I look in the side mirrors and watch the nose of the fiver gently float up and down on the hitch's air cushion.

Again, thanks for all of the advice. I spoke to the Anderson support folks who suggested I raise the truck bed adaptor ball up a notch. and torque everything down and try it, they thougth the top bolt may be bottoming out which they say can cause the chucking issue. In addition, I purchased a new Red Plastic Piece for the kingpin aluminmun block and a safety chain setup. My 3/4 ton truck had a B&W flip ball gooseneck hitch, and I just moved to a 1 ton dually with a factory gooseneck hitch. Hope to have it all back together and tested this weekend. Will post an update once I test it.

I have a Ford factory puck system in my truck with the B&G Companion hitch. Had similar issues a year ago and scared the bejeesus out of me at the time. Finally figured out that the connection point between the base and truck was not tight enough and the rust inside the tubes where the hitch slides in was allowing slippage. I ended up tightening each bolt slightly to get the cotter pin in the crown bolt to the next hole and the problem went away.
It makes it more difficult to remove the hitch, as now I need a wrench to loosen the bolts and take the base out, but I feel better knowing its tight enough to not slip.

Summary, after 2 weeks of working this issue, I replaced the Morryde King pin Plate with the upgraded plate contained in Morryde upgrade RPB77-006. It also included blocks to insert into the four corners of the hitch to only allow forward and backward movement, no side to side at all. This is because of the extra stress the gooseneck adds to the king pin hitch. I also added (unrelated to initial issue) the Andersen safety chain setup. And replaced the Andersen red plastic part that attaches to the kingpin. I chewed the original up pretty bad as I worked with the 4 set screws removing and installing the Andersen parts that attached to the king pin. Lastly I moved the ball on the Andersen adaptor from the lowest position to the middle position as my new truck sits a bit lower than the old one it replaced.

All in all it is working very well ATM. I hope it continues to do so...
