Rear 2in. hitch capacity

I have a new 2020 3120rl with legacy package. This was installed at the factory. Cannot seem to find towing capacity for it. Looking to buy a boat to pull behind and wondering how Heavy I can get.

I had one installed on a previous rig and it was rated for 3000 lbs trailer and 300 lbs ball weight. In some states there a length limits you need to check.

Lay on your back and slide under the trailer and look at the hitch frame. You should see a tag that looks something like this:

I have a Montana High Country, and if the image is not well enough to read, here is what it says:

---------------------------

Warning

Cargo carrying accessory receiver only
DO NOT tow any trailer or other vehicle.
Maximum load capacity 300 lbs. (136 kg) including the weight of the cargo carrying container or equipment.

Use for towing or exceeding load limit will void the warranty. Failure to follow the instructions can cause the carrier to collapse or items to fall which could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.

----------------------------

Yours may be rated different, but there should be a tag attached to the hitch frame somewhere.

If there is not a four pin plug on the back of your rig, it is not meant for towing.

The 2020's changed it out to a Class II hitch 300 pounds tongue and 3000 pounds trailer capacity

Here's what I did to strengthen the rear receiver. I added the HSS2x2x3/16 tube and welded it to the ends of the frame flanges and to the top of the receiver tube. I didn't like the fact the receiver tube cantilevers so far from the cross member. I also placed the chain loop and wiring.

I tow my jetski trailer with a weight of around 2500# and 300# tongue weight.

I sourced the chain loop on Amazon

Many states do not allow towing a trailer behind another trailer or 5er. Not legal in the south east. I have heard it is ok in the north west, but never looked into it. Just be aware, it isn't likely legal depending on where you are going. Can't back up with multiple pivot points like that.

Strengthening the rear is all good and well, but in years past there have been several members doing this and the frame of the 5er starts coming part up in the front end. It has to be strong enough all over, and generally speaking were not built that way.

Come to Indiana, quite legal here. You can tow another trailer behind a bumper pull trailer, OR a fifth wheel trailer. But if you are an Indiana resident, you do have to abide by the over all length limit. That eliminates a lot of double towing, especially with long bed crew cab dualy's pulling 41 foot long trailers.

Also, Indiana is one of the few states that has no restrictions on passengers riding in the open back of pick-up trucks, travel trailer, truck campers, or fifth wheel. (is it a "SMART" thing to do ... probably not, but it IS legal in Indiana).

We were told that if there is a problem in the rear of the 5er, Keystone won't warranty it.

2020 models come with one of 2 hitches - one has a 3k tow limit the other a 300 lb limit. If your model came with a trailer tow light connector you have the 3k tow hitch. Some models are excempt from the 3k tow hitch.

The rear storage models on the 2020 models don't have the towing hitch (see 2020 brochure)

Does anyone know the actual reasoning in some of the models (specifically the 3791RD) not having the 3k tow hitch? If you’ve looked at Montanas side by side, I would feel more comfortable towing with the way the receiver is welded to the frame of mine vs. one that was rated for towing. I’m not an expert, and make no claim to be. I had a local reputable shop look at mine to strengthen it or replace it, as I would like to pull a small trailer with a golf cart. After looking at it, they didn’t see any reason to replace or strengthen it. I don’t specifically know the model specs with 300lb ratings and models with 3k, but do you think it has more to do with overall weight of the rig, not build or strength of the actual hitch? Thoughts?
