looking for ideas to make the spare tire more secure, has anyone done anything to theirs to secure it better?

I use a web strap with a ratchet. Was concerned that the ratchet would load up with road debris. Was able to locate it on the rear of the tire. Still operable after more than 10 years. Got the idea off this forum years ago.

Yeah, just one. Been a while and going from memory but I hooked both ends of the strap, going opposite directions, to the cross member holding the spare tire winch. Took the long end of the strap forward and under the spare and hooked it to the short strap with the ratchet on it on the back of the spare. Hope that makes sense. Getting the rig in a couple of days. I'll try and get a picture.

Help me understand...does the spare tire lift mechanism have a history of failure?
Does the ratchet strap simply add some “insurance” to make sure the tire doesnt come down unexpectedly? And in the event of a flat you have to crawl under there and release the ratchet before letting the tire down?

Or when you say “make the spare more secure” - do you mean secure from theft?

A bike cable lock has worked well for us.

For a very few people, the spare tire lifting assembly has been known to unspool on its own. Several of us dating back years ago have used the ratchet strap described above as added insurance to keep the spare tire in place. This has more to do with peace of mind than keeping someone from stealing your spare.

I was one of the very few dieselguy referenced. Pulled into a rest area and during my walk around noticed the spare had dropped about 4 inches. Cranked it back up and it held until we got home. Had previously seen several comments on this forum about the spare dropping. Decided to apply the cheap insurance. Crawling under isn't a big deal because on my older model I have to crawl under to retrieve the spare anyway.

My OEM winch failed the first time I lowered the wheel.

Wow - I remember that thread ScottZ! I thought “I don’t know how to weld - no way I could ever rig that up!”

The spare has always been hard to make accessible. I keep 1 under the rig where it normally rides. I have a second that I mount on the back. I have a 2” hitch receiver on the back bumper. I purchased a basic bike rack that folds down. Converted that to half the spare. Works great and I do not need to lift the tire.

Forgot, harbor freight has the foldable bike rack for about 30 bucks.

I use a heavy duty bike lock. Run the cable through the spokes of the tire and ten through over the cross member that holds the tire host system to the frame of the trailer.

I used the BAL spare tire carrier. Works well, and it keeps the tire secure. I have to take a look, but I thought I paid less than that when I bought it. Takes about 2 hours or less to install

spare tire

We learned the hard way. Traveling over some rough road during construction, the spare being held by a cable under the trailer decided to depart it's resting place. 20 miles later a motorist waved and said he saw it rolling over the cliff. I purchased a new tire, rim and a mount for the bumper which is 4" square tube I'm guessing for the sewer hose. If your wheel is hanging under the rear, it's not very safe.

I attached my ratchet strap diagonally to the ends of the spare tire carrier. Going to do the same thing to the spare tire on my tow vehicle...has a similar mechanism. Cheap insurance!
