Gulf Shores after the oil spill
Friends who live in Foley AL (near Gulf Shores) sent us a message that included the following part about how the area is suffering from lack of tourists since the BP oil spill. From what we have read, Gulf Shores is pretty much back to normal, except that there are no tourists. Here is the message as we recieved it:
"Our general area looks good except that we do not have tourists. This has put a big hurt on our businesses and some are going under. PLEASE HAVE YOUR FRIENDS THINK ABOUT SPENDING THE WINTER HERE, we need our winter people this year more than ever.
We checked out the State Park a week ago and it was almost empty, so sad. There were a few campers along the lake and that was about it. Looks like the swimming pool could be operational, there was a fountain spouting water that looked good."
(Gulf State Park has about 500 fully service sites)
If your travel plans permit, how about spending a little time along the Gulf Coast this fall and winter to help out the good folk who live there and depend on tourism and fishing.

We will be there stopping there in a few weeks... I'll be sure to spend money even though we will only be there a few nights... We love Gulf Shores.

We usually spend Jan and Feb in Gulf Shores every year. We currently have our standing reservations for next Jan/Feb but we have considered cancelling and going elsewhere; not because of the Gulf situation, but because many establishments there have a habit of jacking up prices during that period (especially the golf courses) and with the poor tourist season we fear that it will be even worse for the snow birds. Face it, most snowbirds are retirees and have to limit their gratuity even though most would really like to be frivilous and help the economy. Not sure what we are going to do at this time.

I'm sure we'll be stopping there for a few days or maybe even a week on our trip out west. Love that area!

We are not cancelling our reservations at the Anchors Aweigh RV Resort, Foley, Alabama. Plan to be there from Jan to April 2011.
