NY to New Brunswick, Canada

We are heading to the Canadian Maritimes for July for the first time, and would love some input as to good roads and nice campgrounds to get there. We will be leaving the Lake George, NY area on June 1, and going thru Vermont and New Hampshire towards Maine. First stop in Maine is the Portland/Freeport area. Then Bar Harbor (Acadian National Park) and are planning on taking Route 1 along the Maine coast into Canada. Is this a good road to travel into Canada and can you recommend some ways to get from upstate NY over to Portland, Maine? Any campgrounds you can recommend?
