Route: Tucson to Grants NM

Tomorrow we’re leaving the Tucson Gem, Mineral, and Fossil show and heading to Grants, New Mexico to visit family.

I’m looking for advice/suggestions on routes (or routes to avoid) and someplace to crash for the night roughly halfway.

The roads look small and there appears to be a range to cross, but it’s unseasonably warm and we shouldn’t have to worry about any weather.

We’re breaking it into two days, but we need to make it to Grants in time for kickoff on Sunday.

Easiest way might be to stay on I10 east to Las Cruses then go north on 85 to Albuquerque. You’ll have to backpeddle on I40 a few miles to Grant but you’ll avoid a lot of winding roads.

Dave,

Recommend 77 and 60 north to Show Low. Try to get in Fools Hollow State Park or Hon-Dah Resort Casino for the night. Slow and winding through Salt River Canyon but that portion is fairly short and doable. Pretty drive.

2 months ago, we came that way and found that 60 was closed til 2pm for extensive road construction every day. I’d check ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation advisories before using that route.

Previous closures on 60 were between Phoenix and Globe vs north of Globe.

Thanks Zack,

I booked us at Hon-Dah. Looks like a nice drive, and then it should be fairly simple to Grants on Sunday.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

Hey Zack,

Great day and great drive, but good golly Ms. Molly. What an E Ticket drive. That was quite a hill profile. Quite the twisty tow.

It was gorgeous though, and this park at Hon-Dah is gorgeous. My wife is fighting a cold and we're skipping the casino. This place is cool enough to revisit though.

Thanks for the feedback on the route.

Dave,

Glad it worked out for you. Have made the run multiple times with our rig without issue. Would not have recommended it otherwise.

We spent three weeks in Grants at the Diesel shop just west of Loves, waiting for a diesel part. Really nice folks there.

I don’t regret the drive at all. It was gorgeous. My wife took tons of photos. Thanks for the recommendation.

And great call on the Hon-Dah campground. It’s gorgeous here.

Yikes. Three weeks in Grants would be too much. Hopefully you got to explore and check out Mt. Taylor.
