Spare Tire Rack

I had to take the spare tire rack down to replace the valve on the galley tank.. This is what I found.. I had a welding shop weld a 1 inch angle on each side to make sure it does not bend again.

Tom S.. I have no idea how this would happen.. The only thing I can think of is at one time the spare tire was not raised high enough and started bouncing up and down.. The rod that lowers the spare was almost touching the bottom metal. It was that way when we first got the Monty.
Now the rod is down about 3 inches from the bottom metal.

Also check the reel and gear mechanism, along with the cable. They have been known to fail and you lose a tire and rim on the road. Had to put a cable and lock on mine, they are stealing them from under campers and trucks around here.

People will steal anything these days.. Will have to check the gears and cable before we leave in about 3 weeks.. I would think if you use a cable it would have to hold the spare in its present location.. would not want it to drop down 6 or so inches going down the road for sure.. if it dropped down to far and bounced back up it would really damage the under belly and the galley tank it it hit just right.. do not think I need that for sure..

A cable lock of the right length would actually have the added function as a fail safe to retain the tire in case the winching cable ever snapped. An added benefit!

Can't believe it, one more thing to worry about! I've already got more locks on the rig and TV than I've ever owned in my life. I guess with the economy where it is some folks will become crooks to survive and the rest were always crooks.

Dick, I agree. I feel lock a locksmith with all my locks. I just bought another lock for the hitch on my utility trailer. When I re-installed my 5th wheel hithch I found it's lock in the bag with the mounting hardware. When I put out our generator up north I chain and lock it to our deck. And now I have to worry about someone stealing my spare? I guess I should invest in a set of keyed the same locks to reduce the weight of all the other keys. LOL

I always remove my spare tire and place it under lock and chain in the pickup bed when I travel through and from Mexico; not to prevent thief but to prevent losing the tire on one of the many speed bumbs you encounter when traveling in Mexico. I was wondering if anyone has ever moved the spare tire mount to the front of the axles. It seems to me that there is slightly more clearance for the spare forward of the axles then behind.

It's really funny to see what happened to the framework support for your spare tire because I've got the same thing on my rig and couldn't figure out how it happened. I've got my answer! After the second tire failed on the road and all was saved by a pressure monitoring system, I called Goodyear and had all the tires replaced including the spare. The mechanic was useing a battery powered impact gun to remove and replace the running tires and I'm sure when he dropped the spare and replaced it, he didn't stop in time lifting the tire and the cable winch crushed the frame. It was never like that before while I was dropping the spare and restoring the " China Bombs ".

My spare tire has always been taken down and put back up using the hand crank.. On our first trip with the Monty we had a flat about 100 miles from the house.. called the road service and they changed the tire.. they put the flat tire back up using the hand crank.. I had the tire repaired a couple of days later.. found out that the tire had been plugged before.. they missed the hole..I always have the tire taken off the rim and patched from the inside.. Do not like plugs.. The only thing I can think of when the driver delivered the Monty and when he put the spare back in place he could of bent the frame..my guess..

Hope Keystone sees that, they should be embarrassed. I carry my spare in the bed of the truck...which is covered with a tonneau when not towing.

I don't trust the the cable to hold the tire up so I have a ratchet strap around the hole thing to hold the tire in place. Plus there is a chain with a lock on the tire.

I saw this lock and thought it would be great to have all my locks keyed the same as my truck key. I haven't used this product but am considering it. Does anyone else have these?

Did you go through their search? I did, and it told me there was no match for my truck. Too bad, because it is an interesting concept.
