A nightmare of a new RV story

While in San Diego at the Chula Vista RV Resort, I got to talking with a family who lives full time down there in their RV (Not a Montana). We had met them before since we frequently stay down there. Our last discussion they were purchasing a new 5th wheel. On the day they were taking possession, they hooked it up and pulled out of the driveway of the RV dealership. Within a 100 yards and upon making a turn at only 3-5 mph, the entire trailer hitch king box ROTATED, broke loose, and crashed into the side of their truck. Needless to say, they are being covered for everything. The damage to the left side of the truck bed is $5,000.00 and the trailer was completely repaired. Luckily the family was not hurt and they were traveling slow. Talk about being upset. No walk through would prepare you for that disaster. Just thought I'd share it.

On a second note, our friend's brand new, never used 38' Alliance Paradigm 5th wheel was on its maiden voyage with us. One of the front hydraulic levelers would not work and the shower leaked down into the storage basement. Just goes to show that ALL trailer manufacturers and models of trailers can have their issues. Stay safe everyone.

True, every brand has their horror stories. But the hitch thing is a first...at least for me. Was it actually welded or just duct taped to the frame? That would definitely be a shocker for anyone.

King box must have been changed for some reason - otherwise can't see how it made it from the factory.

Yep, Dealer could have changed things to make another sale.
When we were purchasing our 2010 Montana 2955RL we realized the table and chairs didn't match what Keystone said they should be. Finally the Salesman admitted they had been changed out to make another sale, so they just pulled the correct table and chairs from another unit to put in the one we were buying. So eventually someone would end up with a non-Montana table and chairs. Dealers will do all sorts of things to make a sale.

When buying a new trailer it would be prudent to look it over carefully for things like the above. When we started looking for a new unit I noticed a couple of new units sitting out in front of the service building in sort of a state of disrepair; furnace door hanging open with nothing but a hole etc. Asked the sales advisor if those were new units in for warranty work - no, they were new units that had been scavenged to repair other units. So if you were the lucky person to buy that unit there is no telling what was thrown back in it to replace what was removed to rectify a situation or satisfy a customer. I will note the above happened well before the current RV situation - they don't have anything to scavenge from any longer...
