I haven't dared do it...Walking on the slides

For scrubbing purposes it would be nice to step onto them. But I haven't dared put the extra 220 lbs out there. Yet, 2 of us sit on the sofa in them on the inside, so your thoughts?

Not a problem based on previous forum posts. I have never had to do it since we have always had slide toppers.

I only weigh 175, but I have walked on mine for cleaning a couple of times and not had any problems. The way I looked at it was that I can walk on the floor side of the slide so the handling gear must be strong enough to walk on the top too. -Glenn

My weight fluctuates between 185 and 195, and I walk on the slides to clean them every time I wash the trailer. I wouldn't jump down on them but stepping down and walking doesn't even flex the top of mine.

I weigh 250# and having never seen how the slides are framed will not be out on mine. The flooring could be built to distribute the weight better than the roof and certainly side stress could become an issue with my weight.

At 175-180 I have walked on mine a number of times when cleaning them of debris from trees. No noticeable flex at all.

I'm about 240 and I wouldn't walk on mine. I have a long handled expandable cleaning brush which allows me to clean them from the roof. But heck I don't even like thundering around on the regular roof unless I have to, and it feels pretty solid. It has nothing to do with heights, I just don't want to stress anything up there. I may feel different after taking a factory tour.

I weigh anywhere from 220 to 240 depending on the weather (that's my story and I am sticking to it) and I walk on the slides to clean them. They are built strong and at an earlier Fall Rally a previous Montana executive, who weighed north of 250+, demonstrated it by jumping from the roof onto the slideout.

I clean the roof everytime we return from a trip and walk on mine everytime I clean the roof. Has never been a problem in the 8 1/2 years we've had the unit. Jim
Carl, I am interested in which kind of weather will take off 20 pounds?

The kind where I am out and about actively doing things rather than huddled in front of the TV eating constantly due to boredom. And I live in CA where the weather is frequently decent. I would explode like a balloon if I lived in the frozen north.

I would like to see that same demonstration at this years Goshen rally, but I want him to do the demo on someone else's Montana, NOT MINE!

I’ve walked on the slides of our previous Montana without any problems. It was demonstrated at the factory to us on one tour that they would support a person. I haven’t been on them with this Montana due to the fact that we have the roll out awning slide toppers.

I know this is an old thread but I'm having the rig cleaned and i'm sitting in it for the first time while they do it (BTW special thanks to the big tree that dumped 4 gallons of sap on my roof in two weeks). After observing the way the slides move and actually watching the slide out roof flex underfoot nobody will ever walk on top of my slide out again. Had to go tell the boss of the crew to stop. Then, I guess he didn't get the message 'cause i had to go out and tell him in a P.C. but yet not so nice way if they do it again they will be asked to leave and never return. They do a great job and have done the rig before but I'll find another crew if they can't follow instructions.

So the answer I'd give to this thread is don't do it. The factory may say it's okay but have somebody walk around on it while you are inside and form your own opinion. It's not worth the risk as far as i'm concerned.

I would not want to get on roof of slide. The big difference between the roof and floor is the floor is supported on all four sides. The ceiling has the side toward the unit unsupported. On some of these long slides that is quite a span. If I had to get on roof I would stand out away from that unsupported span as far as I could. Your main roof above the slide is also unsupported. I'm sure they have to use additional bracing above the slides.

I had this same question so called Keystone and was told absolutely not to walk on roof of slide.

Amazing....As Carl posted back a bit: "...They are built strong and at an earlier Fall Rally a previous Montana executive, who weighed north of 250+, demonstrated it by jumping from the roof onto the slideout."
So...Even Keystone folks can't agree on whether or not we should get up there.

On mine I'm not too sure about the floor handling much weight. With slide out Stand with one foot on slide behind dinette and one foot on main floor. Now rock your weight from one foot to the other. My slide floor will give so much the chairs will lean side ways. I weigh les than 200 lbs.
When setting up I have an eight foot 2X6 that I turn on edge and put under floor between floor and the two rack bars. I then wedge the 2X6 up tight against the floor for support. If I don't do that the table mounting screws pull out of floor when four people sit at table.
