Albuquerque Balloon Festival

We are interested in going to the Balloon Festival in Albuquerque this year. Can you give us any advice on where to camp and what to see and do? Thanks Ken and Pat

We like Enchanted Trails RV park right next door to Camping World on I-40. American RV park across the interstate is a good one also. You must book early for both, however. Albuquerque is a cool town with lots of things to do. Taking the tram to the top of the mountain and taking the train to Santa Fe are just a couple of things we enjoy. If you get your train tickets on line they are very cheap particularly for seniors.

If you can get it, there is also a campground right on the hill overlooking the festival grounds. Imagine being right in the heart of the action each morning as they prepare to lift off just after dawn!

We went last Oct. We camped in their own campground with water and 30amp service.
The campground is about a mile away from the launching field and they have a tram that comes around starting around 5o am to get you amongst the balloons while
their launching. the second day we stayed in bed than ran out of our trailer around 7:00 and watched them fly over and some even landed amongst the campers.we even took a tethered ride on one of them. What a sight to see, well worth the trip!

We stayed in Santa Fe and took the short 45 minute drive down to ABQ for the launch. The first year we tried, the thunderstorms prevented any flying until the last weekend. So last year, back in Santa Fe to see the trees change color, the Santa Fe site worked well for us--the easiest time to see everything is the weekday launches--almost no crowds. Since the flying time each day is usually less than an hour, we were back in Santa Fe in time to have breakfast at Tortilla Flats. As they say "What ever flies your balloon!" or is it "floats your boat!"

Really a sight to see! We camped at their campsite, which is basically a large open lot. Be sure to get what they call a premium site, with water and 30 amp electrical. The dry camping sites are on lower ground, and the year we were there it flooded. Balloons at launch come right over your campsite most days, and as mentioned there are shuttle busses all day to the field. Don't miss the "night glow" or the mass ascencion.

A lot to see and do in the area, too. It's a great time, and not to be missed. It's pretty popular, so if you're going this year you may be too late already.

Good luck!

We made reservations for a premium site at their campsite several months ago and they were running low on remaining sites at that time. Many people make reservations a year in advance.

There is a "park-n-ride" shuttle that runs on Week-ends (but not on Monday thru Wednesday) that is about 5 minutes from these campgrounds. This service costs something like $12 and includes entrance to the Fiesta. We did this two years ago and it was great! No parking hassles and cheap.
